Looking for some MTB tyres for my hybrid

I've had my Speccy Crosstrail Sport Disc a few months now and love it to bits, great for solo morning rides mixing trails and roads plus the odd commute and great for weekend stuff out and about with my wife and kids. That said the bug has bitten hard and I'm going to get a road bike soon (thread incoming!) so the hybrid could do with a change of tyres to more suit the off road stuff.

Without starting a 29er vs 26er off-road debate, can anyone recommend a decent set of 700c MTB type tyres that would offer more grip than the Speccy Trigger Sport 700×38c tyres that are on there now? I know it's not going to match a proper mtb and that's fine but some more off-road grip is in order! Google has thrown up nothing at all so I'm open to ideas.

If your hybrid is the same as mine you'll probably find that due to rim width (rather than diameter), cyclocross tyres are more help with mud grip.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that so I'll have a look at those now. Aside from rim width, it seems the frame width at the back could be an issue too. I might give Evans, Wiggle etc a ring in the morning too and see what they suggest.

If you've already got 700x38 (same size as my hybrid) you'll almost have trouble finding something bigger in 700C. What you need is knobbly, not wide.

I run Rons and Ralphs on my XC MTB and I've just got a crosser with Ralphs but I reckon I'll get a set of Rons soon.

Also look for the vintage Michelin Green Mud cyclocross tyres. They're legendary!
