Came home to other day to a note thorough the door from a neighbor saying their garage was broken into over night and two bikes nicked. I have seen the bikes and they were nothing special at all, standard Halfords cheepy numbers.
Now my bike is nothing special either, Trek 1.1, but with new wheels and other accessories and being next to my Spesh Rockhopper there is well over a thousand pounds worth of kit I would rather not lose.
I have a Magnum X4 (or something) lock which is sold secure gold standard. It comes with 6 laser cut keys so I guess the message is if you lose all of those you aint ever getting your bike back. My bikes hang on the wall, I need some sort of bracket and security bolts to lock the bikes to the wall. Any suggestions? Also anything else I can do to protect the garage? Only entrance is a metal up and over door. Currently we are parking a car right up against it to prevent it being opened. I guess we could continue doing that.

We had a spate of thefts from our garages about a year ago - bib said the majority of them are opportunist scum-bags who will take anything that is not locked to something solid, if bikes are in the garage then great but tools, lawnmowers, garden furniture, kids toys - basically anything that can be sold at a car-boot or in the pub!
The Bib said that if they were 'professional' bike thief's then you have little chance of stopping them, they come prepared and know how to break the majority of the popular locks - regardless of the locks rating.
I have my bikes locked together in x 2's to make them as difficult as possible to move, then locked to the garage rafters. Like you I have a car backed up to the garage overnight and additional bolts on the garage doors with a padlock each side, it's not possible to make them thief proof, but it would stop opportunist scum-bags in their tracks.

Speak to your insurance company and make sure you're covered.
As above, there are gangs of professional bike thieves who will target homes specifically for 'enthusiast level' bikes and their old hands at doing so.
South Wales Police have, or at least had a task force committed to it, they annoyingly told me they're actually pretty sure who the people involved are, they just haven't managed to apprehend any of them at the right time to work out what's happening to all the bikes. I was told they'd stopped them being sold to local 'Cash Converter' type places, they weren't showing up being rode around the local council estates, weren't turning up on eBay or Gumtree or the local trail centres.

I tried moving it into the house and leaving it permanently installed on the turbo in the dining room. According to SWIMBO normal people don't live like that. Who knew?
Just been to B and Q and got a huge steel bull ring to attach to the wall. Got some security screws as well.
I am pretty sure it isn't pro bike thieves, just opportunistic, motherless
s. Car up against the door and bikes secured to the wall should be enough to deter them. If it is pros then so be it, that's why I have insurance.
I have one benefit in that my garage is visible to the main road and we have a street lamp outside. The house that was done was at the bottom of a cul de sac and well out of view.

I did not. My Scott lives in the built in cupboards in the 2nd bedroom. Junior S10 lives in the box room...There is a shed security thread from a couple of weeks ago knocking around and i put loads of tips on there.
Cement some you bolts in the floor, or bolt them in and chew the heads off.
ive also got a couple of those women attack alarms attached to the spokes so if it moves more than a couple of cms the alarm go's off.

The opportunist scum can be persistent, my mate has had the same chav scum visit his garage three times, they feckless and couldn't get in despite his doors being locked with cheese.
He beefed up security after the second attempt and came home on the third and found them in the garden having just kicked in the garage door. All this for common or garden bikes.
Coppers said if they were pros, they would have just gone in through the roof and you wouldn't stop them.
