So if money was no object, what would be your ultimate bike set up .

I favour Campagnola and Colnago , so money no object this would be my spec bike

Colnago C59 disc with Super Record EPS 11,999
Campagnola SRM 11 speed compact power meter 3,750

15,749

how the hell could you insure a bike like this though ?

I'm a big fan of the C59 too, but I'd probably go for a custom Baum Coretto with Campagnolo SR and some handbuilt wheels with mid-depth rims. Something like this:

2 lovely looking bikes there.

As for insurance British Cycling only insure up to £10k so don't know what you would do...

For me...An Independent Fabrication SSR frameset (stainless steel, gorgeous things) it'd have DA 9000 di2 & a pair of Lightweight wheels.

We had this thread not too long ago? For that sort of money an off-the-peg frame just wouldn't cut it. Custom steel or ti for me with at least 3 different pairs of wheels (Lightweight Meilenstein, Lightweight Ventoux and, of course; Ambrosio Nemesis on Kings)

Firefly

Pegoretti

Crisp

or Baum, Alchemy, INdy Fab etc etc

That Colnago is pure sex. Not sure the limit on British Ctcling's insurance would be of any concern to me whatsoever, if I was laying out 12 bags on a bike!!

Ye olde looking metal bikes just don't do it for me.

I don't think Di2 is particularly pretty but EPS is in a whole new class of ugly. That's a shame as Capmag chainrings are very pretty. I have 2013 Force rings on my SLR as they are much prettier than the 2013 Ultegra rings it was specc'd with, much lighter too.

So, ultimate bike (for non race riding)? A Cervelo R5 with DA Di2 and Cosmic Carbone Ultimates (and a spare set of R-SYS for hilly days).

The ultimate bike doesnt need to have an ultimate price tag, i dont "get" colnagos bianchi etc etc, they are ok.. but....meh!!

I sold a £8K cervelo to own my bike, Its a prototype race team frame (supplied to teams and not sold to shops) with Sram Red and Mavic Cosmic SLR's, this bike pees all over the Cervelo I had in every department looks and feel! I think the build only cost me £4k all in.

The problem with bikes at that price is that I'd be scared to ride them hard. Something like this would do me fine biggrin

So what's the difference between 11 grands worth of bike and a mere 1000 pounds sterling? (Apart from the hole in your bank balance) I can appreciate it in cars, but as these have neither engine or suspension I can't really see how much you can change.

Ride both and you'll easily be able to tell - weight and materials used is the main one though. If the difference was £7k to £11k then I'd struggle much more to answer. If you add up components though, it's easy to work out how you get these prices, it's quite easy to add £2ks worth of wheels, £2.8ks of Dura Ace Di2, £1.5ks of power cranks and that's £6.3k without a frame!

Yeah I'd be over to Lynskey for a custom Helix ti frame and then some carbon forks from Enve, some shiny Sram Red bits and some Zipp/Ritchey WCS finishing kit. Until someone comes up with a nice discreet place to hide the battery pack on electronic groupsets, there is no way an ultimate spec road bike can have a dirty great big lump of plastic bolted to the down tube! wink

Like this but without the red spokes

Very nice! Canyon hide it on the non-driveside chainstay near the BB which is a neat solution IMO. Loads of companies putting it internally now though.

That is more or less what I have in mind too. Custom titanium, I'd like it polished, with Zipp 303s, full SRAM Red 22.

Shimano make a Di2 battery that lives inside the downtube.

You could say that the ultimate metal bike wouldn't have dirty great plastic forks. If carbon is a better material, why not make the whole frame out of it? No there's a though!

So if money was no object, what would be your ultimate bike set up?

At risk of sounding like a smug cock, if I had to answer that, I'd say...the one I have now (Genesis Equilibrium with a few shiny bits and battlescars).
It fits me perfectly (I think!)
It's comfortable.
It's faster than I'll ever be.
(I think) it looks nice.
It's tailored precisely to my requirements
It's built on the "It just works" principle i.e. no needless bling.

I love it. I like all bikes, but even the latest super-cooper-carbon-titanium-superbike just leaves me cold in comparison :/
