That time of year and the renewal has just landed for my home insurance. I have been with M&S for the past three years with a great policy that amongst other things had any bike insured up to £4k for no extra premium.

The new policy has gone up by £450-00 p/a and bikes now have to be specified if worth over £2k, so sure to increase the premium even more, probably to over £1k annually eek

So who do people use for insurance? I'm looking to cover multiple bikes in and away from home (but secured, obviously) with values exceeding £2k each.

Is there any loophole policies out there that don't list bikes as specified items? or am I looking at a stand alone policy?

Thanks

I too am with M&S. I went through the exact same thing a couple of months ago. Two bikes. One worth £4.5k and £3k. I looked online for bike only insurance and was looking at over £800.
I contacted M&S and they cover bikes upto 2k then you pay premium on top. So bikes covered for an additional £130 odd.

Give them a call, you never know.

whilst I appreciate insurance covers more than just the theft of the bike from your house/garage, how many kryptonite locks and cables would £320 buy you to keep them secure at home? would you then need to pay the additional premium for bikes >£2k if they are so well locked up, if anyone breaks into my garage, I hope they look at all the locks and think twice... yes I have house insurance and the bikes are named items too but we dont pay a premium of £320, I'll find out who we are with tonight.

Try Allianz. They will cover upto 5k per bikes, and as long as you have no claims history they seemed very competative on the cover when switching (existing customers never get treated as well as the "introductory offer"). I don't have my bike covered with them yet, as its specifically insured via Velosure but when that policy expires I'll add to home insurance (given bike depreciation curve).

Not sure about bikes, but found Hiscox to be a breath of fresh air when we changed house insurers earlier this year.

And they pay claims without trying to weasel out of it too!

Hiscox are meant to be the best in the business in terms of honouring claims, obviously there's a price to be paid there.

Lloyds has recently contacted us to say that they now cover bikes up to £2k kept in the home or outbuildings as long as they're secured - after losing 2 bikes a year ago uninsured (because they were locked in the shed) I had a very direct conversation with them and they confirmed there is no real long-version of "secured" as long as they're locked in the shed, they're covered.

I'd hope they're good, they just quoted me £1100 eek

So far John Lewis seem to be about the best around. I need to call M&S about the renewal though as they might not be too bad once I add the bikes.

Just to add, the M&S policy is worldwide, so if you're taking your bike abroad worth thinking about.

Is it really worth it for that much? I don't bother insuring my bikes, 4 bikes totalling £5k because they're all kept in my flat. Bike insurance is ridiculously expensive frown

The quote was ridiculous, more than double any of the others I've had.

At the moment it looks like I'll go with M&S again, I only need to specify bikes over £2k. Both the SS and the road bike are under £2k so it's only the full suspension bike that need to be declared and it's added £10 a month to the policy price so not too bad.

Thanks for the leads chaps, yet to do the leg work but will keep the thread updated.

Just to clarify M&S has gone up from £370 P/A with bikes up to £4k to £770 P/A with bikes up to £2K!

I'm not too concerned about the security of the bikes at home as I have a good setup, but I like to have them covered for for all the other times I go away and have to leave them in other peoples sheds/garages/huts/front rooms etc.

This is weird as on my m&s policy it states bikes over £1000 must be specified. I had a bike stolen in September whilst at dusk till dawn. M&s organised the replacemnt bike within 5 days. The service was so good, I will be staying with them in the future.

Hisocx are the best by far, followed by home and legacy and chubb.

the hiscox option might be cheaper through a broker and you'd get proper advice.

Ive got a 3 bed house in a quiet safe rural area, have 2 bikes worth around a grand each (kept inside house) and a couple of cheaper ones.Anyone know what a good price to aim for would be? Never claimed in past but have no proof of this as no longer have paperwork. Looking for contents insurance that would cover laptops on the go (not business use)

I have Swintons. All bikes named on the Policy ( bar the 2 new ones of the wifes, need to update) Didnt nudge the policy much and I had a £45 voucher from them if I kept the policy for 3 months, so bikes added approx £60 to the policy in the end. Value of £10k ish IIRC and accidental damage and away from home too.

Aviva cover the value of the bike when inside the house or garage but only £2k when away from home and it must be secured using gold standard locks.

I don't let it out of my sight when out, so this suits me fine.
