single speed with horizontal dropouts means you either have to run a crappy tensioner that will look gash or find a website with a magic ratio calculator based on chainstay length. Neither are particularly appealing options personally.
I'd go for a set of Aksiums, a cheap 10sp 4600 tiagra groupset from ebay (lots of cheap ones from Taiwan) and then some mid level Deda finishing kit and you have a nice cheap bike.

You mean vertical, right? Horizontals are perfect I'd go for a set of Aksiums, a cheap 10sp 4600 tiagra groupset from ebay (lots of cheap ones from Taiwan) and then some mid level Deda finishing kit and you have a nice cheap bike.
That said, vertical dropouts mean you can run mudguards with zero faff (wheel drops out, rather than you having to bend the guard) and you've no drama with getting the wheel aligned in the frame/with the brakes.
so I've spunked more than I was going to on this little project, more out of boredom than anything, buying bits and bobs off ebay when they are going cheap enough.

my other bike is a £500 ribble which i have been using for commuting, blasting round the parks, trips to the pub.. its f
king heavy. fingers crossed this will be nicer and (much) lighter, considering a sram red groupset is worth about double the other bike,

Buy a workstand, it makes life so much easier. The "bolting it all together" part is quite simple and there are loads of videos on youtube if you get stuck. Rear mechs are a faff but the work stand will make it a five minute job.
