I have both, and whichever one im on,i politely nod to riders on the other side of the road, yet if they are on the other type or bike they never smile or reply back.
why is this? dont we get on and nobody has told me?

Went for a ride on the South downs yesterday which takes a bit of getting up to from where I was, so you'd think it would be a bunch of like minded people, but no, about 50% blank looks from the other riders I saw. Far more cheery interactions with the people out walking then the riders.

I'm bisexual too, so will nod to anyone on a bike. Perhaps it's a location thing as most around me - NY Moors - will offer a nod and a smile.

I'm not sure it's case of roadies ignoring mountain bikers, or vice versa, although I have witnessed this. My main observation is that some cyclists ignore others regardless of their bike choice. Roadies ignore MTBers, MTBers ignore roadies, roadies ignore roadies and MTBers ignore MTBers.

I do my rural commute all year round, in the summer you get the haveagoheroes fair weather cyclists looking miserable and unfit blanking my hellos. Normally younger blokes

In the Winter I always get a hello and cheerry smile off every cyclist I see, usually it seems to be women in late 30s-40s. Good on em, theres some steep hills as well to suffer the men from the boys, hence you don't seem to see any younger males cycling!!

I always joke that if they are miserable cnts out on a bike, heaven help what they are like usually!

This. It doesn't matter what you and they are riding, some people will be miserable and ignore you.

This is exactly the situation I find on my rides around Wiltshire. I get more out of walkers and horse riders than I get from other cyclists.

Only yesterday I remarked to my mate that some people were so fking miserable they shouldn't be allowed out in public.
I normally blame it on the fact that they are 'townies' and not used to our friendly rural ways.

MTBer, I nod or give a 'sup' as my Son says to all other riders, almost everyone on a MTB / Hybrid / Tourer and 80% of Roadies will nod back - it tends to be the hardcore in someone else's team colours who don't - I assume they're too busy worrying about getting that first KOM to nod back.

I've come across this a few times - mostly from MTBs when I've been on my road bike, but as I'm a cheery soul, I smile, nod, greet anyone when I'm out, so it washes over me.
Must give a special mention to a group of MTBers out the other sunday who my mate and I met on the top of Church bottom between stoford and the woodfords near salisbury - we had a great little chat about road vs MTB - although I think they were just laughing at us as we complained about how dirty our roadies were!!

I was thinking about this yesterday when out for a medium sized ride. A couple of people passed the other way (on MTBs and on Roadies), I was on a roadie. I smiled and nodded to them. One gave me a look like I had just cut him up in a 4x4 and shouted "You don't pay any road tax". The other completely blanked me as if I wasn't there.

Miserable sods.

Seems pretty hit and miss with either sort of rider around Swindon. Occasionally a polite wave back, other times a blank face and that's from fellow road bikers and mtb riders alike.

I've never understood the whole nodding thing.

I do it, obv, but why?

Do you wave to other drivers? Say hello to other people walking around Tesco?

No but if you pass someone somewhere away from main population areas, walking or cycling, you generally give a nod and say morning etc. At least round these parts.

Roadies round here never wave/nod/acknowledge me when I'm out on mtb. Probably because they look daft and don't want any eye contact! Never once has one returned any wave/nod/hello. I don't get it,a bike is a bike.

You can tell who rides both when they acknowledge you on the opposite. When I first got into road riding remember a friend of mine saying a MTBer will never say hello back, he was wrong for the first 3, but in the main he was right, although does depend where you're riding, if I'm in the back of beyond most people are cheery, its the casual riders in and around urban areas who are not aware of cycling etiquette.

Love it!
I'm bi-bicycle too, and pointedly say a cheery morning or How do when I see another cyclist whatever the type. But I would if I was out walking or running too, it's old fashioned but I like it.
In Abruzzo it is much more common to say Ciao or even Salve, but there are more roadies any day of the week than on a sunny Sunday in Shere and MTBs are quite rare
