My pensioner dad has taken up cycling and he doesn't have a helmet yet so I was going to buy him one.

He's an awkward bugger when it comes to shopping so the best way I could think of doing this would be to get him a Halfords voucher and he can go and pick one himself.

So two questions - is Halfords a good place to get one? and what sort of price?

thanks for any pointers, I know nada about cycling

Does your dad want a helmet? If not, he won't wear one if you buy it for him so you'll have wasted your money.

If you do get him one, helmets are much of a muchness. Get one that's comfortable (for him) and make sure it is adjusted correctly - cost is largely irrelevant.

he has said on a few occasions that he really should get one, so I'm confident he will wear it if chooses one himself.

Halfords have a pretty decent range, they do the Catlike range now also.

Evans has a much larger range in store, if there's one nearby.

Get him one of these:

But seriously all helmets sold in the UK will all meet a good minimum standard and will be more than adequate for recreational cycling.

Halfords is a lottery really, some have some great staff who love bikes and know everything about gear and will help out, others are staffed by surly kids after some beer money and couldn't give a st.
