Annual mileage
Discussion
A few weeks ago, a cycling friend proudly announced he had done 4000 miles this year. Whilst congratulating him, I thought I'd done a bit more than that, so I checked, 4500 miles. Clearly that means I have to try for 5k
and I now have 350 to do. The only problem with this is I had only been averaging about 100 miles a week since October, and if the weather goes downhill it will be a struggle. I need to average 15.6 miles per day or something like that, which makes it sound perfectly feasible, but I like to ride every other day normally.
I ride mainly on the road but my stats include some mountain biking. So let's hear your mileages, I don't expect to have the most by a long chalk, but just interested.

Rule #24 - speed and distance are to be measured in kilometres
I'm at 1994 kms so far this year, I'll get over 2k though but given work schedules and travel I think thats ok. Nearly 500 kms of the total was covered in just three rides though! I'll be commuting on the bike again from March so thats 20 kms per day....

5635 miles so far this year - almost entirely commuting and with luggage on the bike.
Thought I'd see if I could do a whole year without missing one commute on the bike and clock 6,000 for the year.
Almost there!
(although it was a near thing during the snow we had in Jan/Feb!)
Would like to finish on Christmas Eve if I can.

Big respect for that! I commute too, but only 2-3 times a week at this time of year. Do you vary your route? One of my big problems is going the same way all the time, does my head in. My shortest distance is 7 miles, but I sometimes do 20 on the way in and up to 60 on the way home in the summer.Thought I'd see if I could do a whole year without missing one commute on the bike and clock 6,000 for the year.

I'm hoping to get it down to 70 to go just after Christmas, and if I do will ride to Beachy Head to get the 5k. I want to finish the year with a real ride, rather than a bimble round the block, and it is such a symbolic place.
Although, I had a lesson this weekend to show that mileage is not the absolute measure of cycling performance.
I had a ride out with a chap who is training for a half Ironman next year and has been cycling for a lot of years. He hasn't done much on the bike this year but I struggled to keep up with him, especially on hills. This was also true when I completed a Sportive earlier in the year with Pablo who I shade with the amount of miles ridden but again, it is obviously quality not quantity!
Looks like I need to start reading up on improving leg strength and interval training...

I managed to hit 6,000 miles/10,560 kms last year, so really wanted to do 10k miles/16k kms this year. Sadly a new contract kept me in hotels for the best part of 3 months this year, however I have managed 8,185 miles/13,172 kms so far and my contract finishes this Friday so I should be able to hit 8,500 miles/13,700 kms (possibly a bit more)....
