Don't click on this if you have an issue with blood. Goes to show that even a rather inocuous ride can end in disaster. Good job he knew what to do in that situation. Its sobering to think that a guy with all of his skills can have a freak accident like this. Maybe I should take a first aid course.

Celox chaps. We used to use it in MR. It's designed to stop arterial bleeds and funnily enough is available at most places that sell chainsaws.
It comes as either a powder which will fit in you camelback/seat bag or as in impregnated bandage. Very clever stuff.

I think he broke his pelvis which tore open his femoral artery by the sounds of the video.
I watched it a couple of times but the choppy edit made it hard to follow, must have missed the pelvis bit... still sounds like a big injury given the look of the accident- I suppose there could be a rock hidden in the grass he landed on or something. The way it was p*ssing out made me think he'd landed on his brake lever or something.
Not sure about this one, but he did break his pelvis a year before and nearly died because of internal bleeding, I might be wrong but this one was 'just' a really bad gash.
He's got some nuts on him though, lots of people might have got to bits, but he's straight into the wound with his fingers, must have stung a bit.

By kneeling on the wound itself. That's why they were taking it in turns to add pressure with a knee as a lot of force is needed. Another method would be a tourniquet but most people don't carry one.
Just to add in this case I think the wound was too high up to be able to use a tourniquet.

Don't be shy about putting a boot in there. They wont thank you for it at the time (and I'll happily concede to any paramedics on here that know better) but t'was how I was taught.
The clotting stuff mentioned up the page is magic - but get the bandage/strip. Negates wind/eyes/mouth unpleasantness...
Stay safe!
