Budget Wheels - Fulcrum 7/R501/Mavic Aksium

Hi all,

Looking for some budget replacements for the wheels on my Triban3. On the face of R500/501 seem like they might be worth a punt and on various online retailers the reviews are all pretty good, but reviews on the wider web are patchy. (regular broken spokes etc etc)

I know the Fulcrum 7 and Aksiums are slightly more expensive but are they worth the extra cash or is it all much of a muchness at this price point?

I'm normally riding around the 150 miles a week mark if that has any bearing on it. (no pun intended)

Any suggestions much appreciated! (budget creep isn't going to be possible btw as disposable cash is a bit limited at the moment!)

TBH no more than the Aksiums (at the moment at least) so i guess 140-150GBP tops. I just need to replace the standard wheels, one of which keeps going out of true, plus they are pretty poor quality anyway so although I could put OEM wheels on it again very cheaply, it seems a bit counter productive really.

Fulcrum 7 are good value and an excellent wheel for the money if you can get them for less than £120

I replaced the standard wheels on my Triban 3 with R501's - I'd use the money saved over the Askiums to change the tyres & tubes too - changing the all 3 will make a more noticeable difference than just the wheels alone if you're working to a budget figure. No issues at all with the R501's on mine.

I've just had a pair of Shimano RS30s on my new build.
Nice and strong as I'm a fatty, bit of a dish on them and aero spokes.
£130 and weigh in at 2kg a pair

For £150 I'd keep an eye on eBay. I got a new set of Fulcrum 5 wheels off a new bike for £150. There's a set on there now, complete with tyres for £165, shame they're Campagnolo, else I might have been tempted.

Been racing cross on Fulcrum Racing 7's and not a problem with them, stayed good and true, even after chucking them in the scenery a few times. Bearings all good, and freewheel still nice, so no complaints here.

Merlins are doing them out £104 including postage, whoops and now I've bought another pair, it's for cross you need spares

Thanks chaps, ill keep a look out on ebay for the time being i think. I long ago binned the OEM tyres so no worries in that department.

Merlin doing Racing 7s at £104 is a bit of a no brainer in my books, might just order up another pair a spares
