Today I lost a brake pad - no idea how????

The brakes are Tektro IOX cable-operated discs.
I've found I'm tightening the inboard pad adjustment screw a lot recently, to account for pad wear. Today I lost all bite in the rear brakes, but when I tried to tighten it up again, the allen-screw was loose in the calliper. Puzzled, I scraped all the mud and clag off the calliper and only one pad was present, the outboard pad. The 'static' inboard pad was no-where to be seen, nor could I work out how the blue blazes it could have escaped without removing the wheel.
Ho-hum. So I cut the ride short and headed for home, with the intention of 'borrowing' the pads from one of the kids old bikes. No dice. They were Tektro IO brakes, with square pads, not round ones.
Q? Anyone hazard a guess as to how this has happened?
I can only see one way, and that's that the pad wore so thin that the rotor pulled it out of the calliper under braking.
Q? What kind of pads should I buy?
I'm thinking 'sintered' but there are lots of 'organic' pads on various websites, and also some 'original Tektro' pads that don't say whether they are sintered or organic, and the prices vary hugely, from about £4.99 to £17.21 per pair.
My other worry is that some are advertised as 'post 2010 Tektro IOX' and wiggle for one doesn't label the pads in it's image and there are 4 different types in one image http://www.wiggle.co.uk/tektro-disc-brake-pads-pai... How do I know which to buy?
Not many LBSs seem to stock every kind of pad, and these brakes are low-end kit, to be fair. Even if I can find a LBS with stock it will surely be quite expensive to replace the pads 'in the shop'.

If you're not unhappy with the performance, take a pad into Halfords to match up with Clarkes / Tektro replacements.
Had some on my younger's bike, ditched for cheap Hydros as they just did not work, especially with the limited amount of pull from a small hand. Also got some on an (adult) Subway which work pretty well though.

Was happy with the performance through the earlier part of last year, but pad wear has been an issue through the wet winter (to be expected). I've had the calliper stripped a couple of times, to clean it up, and after that the performance really improved.
I'm still puzzled by the 'how' of a brake pad disappearing, but it's still very mucky, so I'll give it a wash in daylight tomorrow and check for any damage before I take one of the pads with me to Halfords via a couple of local independents. It's a pain as I planned a 2 hour ride today, and it was pretty much over in 30 minutes

The brake material comes off, because the backing plate, which is steel is either rusty and this unglues it or the glue is old. Basic pads are not 'really' designed for major riding on brakes like Tektro s. There are better pad material and if you ride in mucky conditions then get some sintered pads. Uberbike do some great cheap sintered ones.
