What XC MTB? £650

Just wondering if anyone has seen any good deals around on hardtail MTB's recently?
A friend of mine came for a ride with us at the weekend and now wants his own bike to join us more often. His budget is £650 with no creep.
He was lent a Cube Acid 29er for the ride which he was OK with. But he's probably be just as happy on a 26 as the rest of us use. I expect him to do more tarmac/gravel than actual trials.

Good suggestions, but i can't see any amazing deals around for 2013 models etc.

Personally, 'meh'. X5, Avid, Recon silver.
When I was looking it was Voodoo Hoodoo or Rockrider 8.1. Twas mentioned here last week, Go Outdoors' Calibre Two Two. Plenty change left over for a Reba.

On On inbred, with in £50 of your budget. I got mine so long ago I can't remember and it's still going strong having been thrown along many a trail centre and full on downhill course.

Check out Evans Cycles too, again just stick in a £600 to £650 price range and a few reductions come up.

I bought a 2008 Trek 4500 in 2009 while it was reduced and it's great. Good frames and the cheaper parts can be upgraded as they wear.
Edit: I've just realised that Alpine Bikes might not be an option as they require collection from store for Trek bikes and they only have stores in Scotland.

Thanks for the suggestions. Seems to be a struggle to find anything with half decent front forks. Most have Rockshox XC which i've heard are awful and for the price of the bike it should really have something better.
I don't know anything about the Suntor shocks, which ones are good and which to avoid?
The low end GoOutdoors bike really doesn't look bad for the money! plenty of room to upgrade those XC shocks as you say.

XC28 actually rated ok for a coil fork. Lighter than the 30. Comparable or better than Suntour XCR, which is above XCM and their low end XCT. None of them are any good though, really.
Of course secondhand will find a myriad of looked after big brand bikes with a good air fork, SLX or XT, Shimano hydros, proper tyres. My 5 year old XTC 2.5 had all that and an upgraded wheelset for £275 and I've just upgraded the brakes for £40.

Interesting, i am looking myself but at sub £400 bikes. That Calibre Two Two seems a bargain at £339 in the sale.When I was looking it was Voodoo Hoodoo or Rockrider 8.1. Twas mentioned here last week, Go Outdoors' Calibre Two Two. Plenty change left over for a Reba.

Managed to get one for £300 for my friend in the end as it had a slight paint defect. Gets a good write up too
My opinion of it compared to my Vitus Zircon II is that it's not as well built, the shocks really aren't anything to write home about, but I've seen loads of bikes at twice the price with these XC28's on, the Recon Silver is massively better IMO.
The brakes aren't so sharp, but they work with a bit of effort. The gears are surprisingly lightweight to change and are very smooth, smoother than my X5's.
It has a lot of cheapy bits on it, the grips are naff, the saddle looks pants although not uncomfortable. Pedals look a bit gash.
But all in all. Considering he paid less than half what I did once I'd added pedals to my bike, I think it's pretty reasonable. A lot better than £100 halfords special, that's for sure!
Word on the street is this offer for 339 will end on the 21st.

I've got the Cube acid 29er and the fork seems fine to me, don't have anything else to compare it to though!
I've been looking with a mate this week for a new bike for him at a similar budget. He wants a 29er with air fork and decent spec, think he's narrowed it down to

They are all very similar aren't they, what with BR-M395s again and 30.9 seatposts (handy for dropper posts)
As it is in stock (their delivery lead times can be silly and unreliable for non stock stuff) I'll say Canyon. The quality and resale will pay off. It looks awesome and has the widest bars and SLX shifters ... Cube's bars may be a little narrow and the Canyon's could be trimmed down if necessary. It also lists over a kilo lighter, don't quite know how though. Tyres perhaps.
Developing a liking for the brand could get expensive over time though
Cube very close 2nd for me. Could win if I was happy with the fit & finish of one which could be tried I suppose unlike a Canyon. 1 degree slacker head tube angle for a bit more confidence down hill.
