Is this bit of paint enough for someone at Richmond council to say "we have built another 10kms of cycle lanes in the borough"?

What do they expect it to achieve for people actually using the road?

These symbols are usually painted on "advisory" rather than "formal" cycle routes and are intended more for the vehicle drivers' attention to raise awareness that's it's a recommended route for bikes than they are to direct cyclists.

Update: actually they are there to help cyclists to follow a route, any "raising driver's awareness" function is purely incidental

They are invariably on quieter roads, and not supposed to be signalling the presence of a bike lane unless there are solid or dashed white lines marking out said bike lane.

There's a road in Blackwater where there's red paint and 'bicycle' pictograms painted on the road, but only at the mouths of side turnings into the adjacent estates. I think it's a good idea, as it might actually draw idiot drivers' attention to the fact that cyclists established on the major route actually enjoy priority over those vehicles turning into or out of these minor side roads.

Stick it somewhere where drivers might see it then instead of in the gutter...
