Garmin accuracy when following courses

Can anyone help?
I have a Garmin 510. On a couple of routes I have created a course using the previous ride as the basis within the unit so I can race the Virtual Partner.
On riding the exact same course again, the distance measured is less.
For example, on my route home from work, the route was ridden and measured at 11.5miles on 6/1/14, a distance the iPhone and Strava agreed with all through last year.
I converted this into a course, followed the routing instructions exactly and the measured distance changed to 10.49 miles on 8/1/14, 10.96 on 20/1/14 and 10.24 on 24/1/14!
As an experiment, I rode home from work on the exact same route but didn't follow a course and the distance was 11.49miles!
This is most anoying as the times are all much the same so it is not recording my average speed correctly. What is even stranger is that it has me thrashing the Virtual Partner until 100yards from home when the device must realise something is wrong and he suddenly finishes!

Garmin don't know what is happening either. Having spent 35mins on the phone to them, they sent me the following email:-
Owing to the issues you are experiencing with the "Course" function on your device, we have contacted out software developers in the States for further clarification.
In short, this issue has been reported and is being investigated by Garmin at this current time. It would appear that this is indeed a software related issue and that a future software update will resolve things.
There is no word as to when the update will be released, although you may well find that riding courses will under record data slightly, and that the longer the course the more pronounced this will be.

The software is 10% off when following a course. Bit of a problem as this was one of the main reasons for buying a Garmin.
