Clubmate nicked my KOM
Discussion
So got an email to say that one of my 3 KOM's was nicked last night, checked Strava and it was a fellow club member who went out in the high wind and targeted several segments that were in a favourable direction.
I wouldn't normally mind losing one at all as I couldn't really care less...but his total ride was just over 5 miles long, so this was purely wind assisted KOM bagging and no bones about it
Said clubmate has 4 or 5 pages of KOMs already, so was just adding to his total
I should also note that there was no wind when I set this KOM, and he only pipped me by a single second
Do I
a) Ignore it
b) Target all his existing KOMs on really short rides just to teach him a lesson - even if it means driving to further distance segments and doing a quick warm up, bag the KOM and go home
c) Let his tyres down on the next club run
d) Something else
Over to you PH...

You should easily get it back today then.A local rider did a similar thing in the summer and went out riding purely for windy KOMs http://app.strava.com/activities/58645598
I have a few and they are all wind assisted. Clearly I put the effort in on those segments however they were done during a ride and the ride wasn't just to get them.
I had always imagined that every KOM was taken by someone warming up on a turbo trainer for 20mins in a heated truck at the bottom of the segment, then attacking it - sprinting their guts out for the whole thing, followed by a leisurely warm down freewheel back to the start to try again in case they didn't "win".
I was gutted when I clicked on one to find it was just part of some guy's weekly century ride.
Either way - stalk him and punish him.

I stopped worrying about KOM's and started worrying about cycling. One guy I know gets the major and I mean major hump when he gets trumped somewhere.
It's all part of the fun of Strava. It's probably best to assume that almost all KOMs were taken when the wind was favourable. Even with decent length hill segments, if the wind is on your back your going to have
Option B is what you should do. Clearly this guy loves having these "trophies". What better way to get your own back than emptying his cabinet!!!
Yes it's childish. But it's also fun. And a bit like interval training. My record was 11 in one day from a former nemesis. All were less than 1\4 mile and all in a housing estate with leader boards with less then 20 riders (some had only been ridden by the said nemesis). Basically none segments. Still had a grin on my face doing it.
It's all healthy competition. Go destroy him!

There is a guy near me who has loads of KOMs and nicked one of mine by several seconds (short segment). I've never met him but he comes across as a complete tool from his ride descriptions and the fact that he might get 2 or 3 KOMs on a ride but it's never normally more than 25 miles and averaging around 16.5mph so he must be absolutely killing himself just for the segments (all short ones too). Some of the routes are really odd, double backing on himself after a segment and plenty of mickey mouse segments through housing estates etc.
I will target some segments but only as part of a ride, not the purpose of the ride. He has pages of KOMs but most are not what I consider "real" segments, many riders around me who I consider to be good have hardly any.

Abandon strava and either actually compete or ride just for fun? There isn't a KOM around here that hasn't been set without the help of wind assistance or on a club run treating it as a team time trial.
Between that and the abuse of 'flag as hazardous' I chinned off strava a while back

A lot of the KOMs around Dorset were bagged by ex-pro Dan Lloyd. Some of them (like a 10 mile TT segment) were bagged at the end of a 100 mile ride! I was gutted when I clicked on one to find it was just part of some guy's weekly century ride.

Pity he hasn't logged any rides on Strava for a long time...
