Hi guys/girls, as above really! Looking to buy a new XC mountain bike, considering either full suss or hard tail but looking to spend around 600 - 800 quid! Is the Finance on a new bike really worth the depreciation? Or should I see if a LBS could do a deal on a pre-owned bike? Bang for buck we are looking at Boardman, but if I go the finance route it will look towards cube or Trek/Scott I think. Any views or options on finance good and bad?

800 isn't really enough for a full sus bike, it will have a lot of budget components and be a heavy and unresponsive ride. I'd look at a hardtail and possibly consider doing some research on 0% credit cards! depreciation on new bikes is usually about 40-50% in the first year and 10% per year thereafter. Second hand is your best bet, try singletrackworld, pinkbike and bike radar classifieds online

Yeah I appreciate that £800 wouldn't be enough new for full sus but seems to be ok in the second hand range. Hard tail seems to be a good option. I've got a specialized stump jumper full sus at the moment but it’s getting on the vintage side so would be looking to sell that and part fund the purchase. Credit cards are also an option, never thought about that!
I'm 6"1 dude, how much you looking at??

If you are buying new buy in the sale and on finance, I always suspect the RRP goes up to allow a company to sell the bike with 0% APR

I'm not aware of any shops that give 0% finance on sale bikes, you only see 0% on full RRP.

I've had it from Evans a couple of years back, looks like they have stopped it now though

Pauls do 6 months @ 0% even on their sale items, or they did when I bought mine.

Yeah, I guess I'm going to have to look into it. I've got a LBS near me so will pop in there and see if they can actually do finance on a 2013 old stock bike. If they can't I would have to buy new 2014 stock and just take the depreciation. If neither option is available I might just sell the current steed and look down the 0% CC route. Any particular brand that is top notch on quality for money?

Good bet is to walk into your LBS with cash in about October when they're trying to clear stock to make space for next year's ranges. Got nearly £600 off a my Trek fuel EX8 doing that smile If they still have any 2013 stuff lying about then they should be pretty keen to get rid, but unlikely to do finance for sale stuff- essentially when these places do finance they are taking a loan out from a 3rd party and paying the interest for you (making it look like 0% to you) which eats into their profit margin.

If you want hardtail and don't mind a 2013 model I've just bought one of these and it's lovely. http://www.rutlandcycling.com/199901/products/gian...
Shimano SLX group, Recon Gold fork and carbon composite frame - and they offer 0% if thats what you're after. For the money I doubt you'll find much better.

Whoah there!

Wait till their next 10% event.
Use a 10% off British Cycling discount (either join up yourself or ask someone local)
Register for Quidco and get ~3% cashback.
That bike now costs ~£785.

I have the 2013 Team FS (with the old fashioned 26" wheels) and it is absolutely amazing for the money.
Cant do 0% finance there, mind...

At a risk of sounding a bit silly can I ask why if you are just getting back into cycling you think you need a £800 full suspension bike?

If you know a bit about bikes and can do some maintenance there are loads of great second hand bikes but you have to be careful as there are also plenty of stolen bikes out there to!

I think either saving the money up or going the finance route is what I will need to do. All I need to do now is find the correct sizing! (For the trek roadie I was a 54) With all the different shapes etc ill need to find a good rough size. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I like all the suggested bikes!! Typical that when light is shed, the decision gets harder as it's what do I choose? Do I stick to popular brands or think outside the box and go for quality over the name brand.

aka_kerrly not at risk at all mate. Always been into two wheels, raced motocross from a young age and have been XC a few times in the past. Just seems as though my current equipment is a little tired and the money I would need to spend may not be the way forward right now. I was also looking to get another road bike at the same time so maybe the shop may be able to cut a good deal smile.

Honestly? Ebay / Gumtree / wherever.

I bought two new boardmans last year, cx team as a winter road / cx bike and an ht pro mtb.
They are both excellent, and managed to get them for less than the secondhand going rate (having watched eBay like a hawk) however that's not really a repeatable deal and I wanted a small frame size that was uncommon.

10% off weekend / 10% british cycling / 10% off 2013 models (after the '14s were out) and another 10% off the cx as it was ex display.

Could have bought vouchers at 10% off if I'd planned it better to buy them with.... Which would have lopped another 10% off the top.

I also picked up another two off eBay - a 2010 pro carbon with sram red bits and a 2010 team. Both for silly money. The team is likely to go! It was a backup while my cx was having major post-crash surgery.

There are bargains to be had, whether new or used, the problem is finding them - and if youre looking at boardmans for the bang for buck (there's better, there's cheaper, but I haven't found cheaper AND better) then you aren't going to get finance.
