New "waterproof" what colour

So gonna get an Altura Night Vision.

My sensible head says go for Orange/Yellow

But prefer Black mainly because the Y/O look horrid but suspect at this is a
1) Dangerous
2) Tarty
3) Silly MAMIL behaviour

If I was getting a Evo, I'd get red but think its too thick/heavy. Views?

I've had a black one for about 5/6 years and its been perfectly safe, from riding home from work on a Winters night, to stumbling along the road from Arnage at 3am after a few beers.

The high-vis stips do a very good job of getting you seen.

I was in the same boat, went for the black. More than enough reflective bits to keep you seen, without making you look like a div.

I have an Altura night vision in grey, which felt to me as a best compromise between the bright colours and black.

I took delivery of this yesterday (won it in a Facebook competition) which is also available in black with the "prominent" reflective patches

All my waterproofs are fluorescent as if it is raining, visability is normally poor and do I want to REALLY stand out.

I have a plethora of flashing lights, I have a Phaart Bleep and a Chinashine for main lights and a slack handful of these eBay specials...



One on each fork leg and one each side of the seat tube. They give off light over 90 degrees each, so four will give you full 360 degrees coverage, only 99p a set delivered.

Bright colours are good for low-light conditions though, and also being spotted by things that don't have headlights to reflect back, ie pedestrians.

I like to be as bright as possible in the hope that it wakes gormless drivers up. That said I did get knocked off whilst wearing my bright day glo Altura jacket, only works if the driver actually looks your way before driving into you!

I'd always go bright personally

I have a Mavic Vision that I wear when it's dark, lots of reflective strips and highly visible. Was stopped 3 times last night by cyclists asking what the jacket was as it was very bright




For daytime cycling a this time of year I prefer my Gore Phantom 2.0 which I think is more visible in the daylight

I bought the orange Altura Night Vision, you can pick them up in the small size for about £35 on ebay so that's why I got it

I agree - most of my cycling clothes are fluorescent yellow. The only time I don't wear fluro is nice summer day rides.

Reflecting strips work very well at reflecting light, however as others have said - pedestrians, or even just cars at dawn/dusk without lights, aren't emitting anything and so you only have the brightness of the jacket to show.

Especially at this time of year - it's just the cross over between light/dark during my commute, and so many cars don't yet have their lights on.

I can't fathom why you'd ever have the choice and go for a black one, being honest, but then I am very OTT with wanting to be seen. For example, this was me on the PH cycling trip to wales last year;

Yeah but black looks good :-)
Honestly at night lights and reflective are visible long before someone would think "hmmm that chap is yellow"

That said I've got two black jackets and two "death by dayglo" yellow numbers. Oh and a red one. And a black and white one and..... Yeah probably some others.... N+1 applies to cycling kit too....
