Road bike pump

To say the least I have all the kit where mountain biking is concerned. However being new to road biking and after reading "The Rules" I realise I need a pump that will fit in my jersey pockets.
I'm sure this has been asked before but what should I buy?
I've not got much interest in the CO2 canister type. Just a manual pump for me.

Topeak mini morph or which ever one allows it to double up as a mini track pump. I defy anyone to get a useful amount of psi into a wheel with the type suggested above. I have an old Blackburn one and the best method I have found is to attach it, out a tyres lever on its side on the ground to rest the head on and then can out nearly my full weight into pumping it up. Get 100psi in there that way which is very hard to do without using the floor to stableise your efforts. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-mini-morph-pump/

It supports presta and schrader valves, and it has a decent length of hose which fits inside. So it looks smart/tidy but has that hose which makes pumping easier/more efficient without risking damage to the valve/rim.
It is a frame mount rather than jersey item, but it has versions for mounting on the top tube via cable tie, or on the downtube behind the water bottle. Either location keeps it out of the way.

What Benji said.Screw the "Rules". Rules are for people with limited imagination. Lezyne 'Road Drive' all day long. The bracket simply bolts to the frame behind (or instead of) a water bottle cage, and the velcro strap which secures the pump to the bracket is very secure indeed.
I got 'T-boned' by a van at the beginning of February, and the pump didn't shift at all. If it'd have been in a jersey pocket it could have caused me an injury, either from the impact of the van, or the landing on the floor, or it may just have disappeared, never to be seen again.
I think it's pretty inconspicuous when fitted to the seat tube, thus....

Despite some people's assertions, I've yet to come across anyone with a 'portable' pump that can put a genuine 100-120psi in a tyre, let alone do it before the people you're riding with have frozen to death, died of boredom, nodded off, or decided to hang you from a tree with your own inner tube.. and riding on 60-70psi sucks.
The answer is a genuine innovations air chuck and a couple of canisters. Small, light, controllable and just works.
(Obviously this is a *slightly* tongue in cheek post, but I'm serious about the CO2!)

I've also yet to come across a co2 solution that works EVERY time without fail, I've now seen at least 4 or 5 people waste a cannister by doing it wrong, or it not connecting properly, etc etc.
The other way to do this is get a pump that also does the co2 thing, then you have best of both worlds.

I usually have both on me.
I’ve got an Airchuck with one canister under the saddle and a Lezyne Pressure drive that’s either in my rucksack on the commute or in a pocket.
When I fix a puncture I usually inflate and deflate the tube as I find it helps with fitting the tyre.
Using the Lezyne I can get the tyre up to a perfectly useable pressure but it does take quite a bit of time. Hence the Co2. I’d also prefer to just whoosh it right up a good pressure if I was 20 miles from my destination and didn’t fancy nursing a tyre that’s a bit squashy all the way back.
If I didn’t already have both I’d say the normal + Co2 combination pump is perfect. IMHO it’s good to have a pump with a hose though rather than one that attaches directly to the valve. If it’s a case of only having one or the other then I’d go for a good normal pump that can get 100+psi in rather than just Co2. Punctures usually come one after the other IME and setting off for a long ride without a bottomless supply of air seems a bit daft to me.
IIRC Leyzne (other makes are available) do a adapter that gets a Co2 canister to marry up with their ABS hose from the normal pumps. That would probably be a good combination.

okgo - fair enough, but TBH, I struggle to understand how anyone could stuff up the air chuck and a threaded canister - never missed in 5 years of riding.
.. and I'm still a skeptic about the micro floor drive. Maybe it can get to 120, but personally I don't have that much patience.
Like everything, personal tastes and mileage may vary, hence being a little flippant. I always used to use a mini pump on a MTB, but I only ever wanted about 40-45 psi.

Being sceptical is fair enough, I'm the same with canisters, I think that if I stuff up the inflation then I'm stuck (probably wouldn't happen, but still...). I've been out on Dartmoor in some horrific weather & I take the micro floor drive as I know it'll get my tyres up to pressure reliably & surprisingly rather quickly. I don't want to risk being stuck on the moor & the MFD gives me confidence. I don't find it to be too big on the bike, but I know a lot of roadies will.

I have one of these and had to use it Sunday. Was damn near impossible to get any air through it with the pump. I bought it cheap on Sportpursuit ages ago, not sure I've ever used it. Used my CO2 with adapter ( Not the hose ) and got going but that was my last air for the ride. Tried to get the hose flowing again but nothing and ended up making it unusable, slipped with the drill Ah, here it is

A new hose is the price of a new pump pretty much. The standard ABS hose does not fit - I have a HV one for MTB and tried.Looking for something to replace it with now, Probably just a mini pressure Drive.
Resurrected to ask what are the best options now? Has CO2 technology moved on in the last couple of years?
