mountain biking in chamonix
Discussion
I did a 7 day ride around the Alps, starting in Chamonix, last summer. There's some fantastic riding to be had and I did it as part of an organised holiday. I'm not sure I'd be venturing anywhere without a good knowledge of the area - from the air you'd be amazed at how many junctions and switches some of the trails around Chamonix has and it probably wouldn't be hugely difficult to get yourself lost.
As part of the trip we spent an afternoon in Pila, which I think is around an hour's drive from Chamonix and it offers a bit of everything.
The downhill runs can be pretty hairy and will probably dwarf anything you might have done in the UK.

Lots of good routes are covered here: http://www.chamonixbikeblog.com/
As mentioned, take knee pads if riding enduro and even body armour if you're going to use uplifts. It's very rocky compared to the UK but the trails are amazing.
