24" Kids MTB

Usual what bike thread, son is due an upgrade in next few months, have seen a couple but nothing stands out.

Will try and take a look at these two

I got my daughter a Frog 69 and although she was initially a bit disappointed it didn't have the front suspension like her brother, she loves it.
It looks and feels like a very nice bit of kit for the price.

We only do pathways though, not hard core downhill.

Just bought a couple of these and they are very good for the price.

The Islabike I really like thank you, its a shame its a 3hr drive to test ride it, but I think it might be worth it - air fork and Elixir 3 for £650 is good. Looking at their size guide he is very close to their 26"

He has the 20" version of the Ridgeback already and he loves that, didnt see the 24" on the usual sites (Evans, wiggle, crc, jejames) but i'll have another look

Daughter has the 20" Frog Bike (Frog 55) and I think its fantastic, very well built and very light. He test rode a load of bikes at the NEC in September and he did like the Frogs I must admit

Something to think about - apparently Islabikes hold their value particularly well (at least in the smaller sizes), for when the lad grows out of it.

Any way you can hold out until he fits a 26"? My boys were on XXS Giants at 10 years old.

They occasionally come up on eBay, I'll probably try to do the same, most, if not all the bits on it are standard / adult standards so should be easily serviceable and the older ones are better spec with Rockshox DJ forks so more tuneable.

Yeah it's going to weigh about twice what a Islabike will, depends what you're after.

My Lad is 8, rides adult trail centre stuff at a reasonable pace and rides the easier downhill tracks in the Alps with me on his Hotrock HT, he's been Mountain Biking since he was 5 or so.

He'll muscle this about when he's tall enough for it and could make use of the suspension and extra braking, probably going far quicker then I'd like him too ha ha.

If he was more into cycle paths and longer XC rides I'd go another way, it'd just end up being a very heavy and expensive way to cheese him off otherwise.

There's the rub kids (including the male adult type) love things like suspension and it does look "cool"

I managed to persuade my daughter due to the colour scheme but she really wanted one like her brother with the suspension etc. However she has commented a couple of time on how "fast" the bike is and that is feels really light. She is riding it more than ever, although it's only been a few weeks.

I bet that given the choice again she would still be looking at the front forks!

I looked at Islabikes for my nippers. We did the Internet research together. I explained the benefits of the lightness of the Islabikes but whilst they said they understood they were still drawn to the chunkier bikes with front suspension.

The Ridgebacks we bought are RELATIVELY light and the suspension is far more functional than I had presumed it would be.

After a quick check I didn't consider the Kona due to not being able to find out the crank lengths. Also not 100% convinced about f/s for young'uns.

There's a real trade off between what you know is the more sensible choice and what will actually get them riding more because it's cool and they/their friends like it.

It is a bit of a lump but as P-Jay said some kids like a bike for the tougher stuff!
