Can turbo trainers cause chains to snap?

First ride of the year on my road bike last night and my chain snapped. The chain had done about 500 miles at the end of last summer and maybe a dozen sessions on turbo trainer.

Found it really wierd it should snap so soon? It broke an actual link so not even a pin etc. the chain was a kmc 10 speed , so now I've got to mess about buying a link etc. or shall I bin it and get a ultegra chain as not too impressed by kmc?

I'm genuinely surprised by that. I fit KMC chains as a matter of routine now. MTB and road bike, and replacing an Ultegra chain for the roadie.

I had a virtually new SRAM chain snap on me, shortly after fitting it. That one gave up at the pin, the outer plate letting go while off road. I managed to effect a repair using a multi tool as a hammer, and a crank arm as an anvil, and took it easy all the way home, then lobbed a KMC chain on instead. I've not had a chain give up on the road bike yet.

Not sure if that's going to be any help, though.

If I can buy at a discount, I go for Shimano like for like replacement, but at RRP it's KMC all the way for me.

My next problem is that i managed to flag down a passing biker who had a chain tool, so i rejoined the chain and now cant find where i joined it!! I was planning to put a joining link in so now i guess i'll have another snap if i leave it.

Nope. No more than any other kind of riding.

Sounds like you just got unlucky, was probably defective from the factory and didn't get picked up in QC. Have used plenty of KMC chains for big miles, as well as shimano. Chain is pretty much chain, the KMC ones are rather handy with the re-usable link; makes maintenance that bit easier.

I'd get another frankly, rather than mess around with one that's potentially questionable. Don't necessarily write KMC off on one unfortunate incident, but get whatever you feel like.

From what I'm told it is KMC who make Shimano chains

Funnily enough, my Boardman FS MTB uses a KMC 10-speed. On my 2nd or 3rd ride i heard a ticking sound as i pedalled - getting home i found one side of one link had snapped, and the chain was held together by just the other side! replaced with a KMC quick-link and its been fine for the past 500 miles.
Just undid the quick-link the other day to give the chain a really good clean and used the same link to put it together again.
Im not put off KMC, these things happen. Just make sure you always have a link with you.

I also had a ticking/ clicking sound just before it snapped. This followed by me hitting my nuts on my stem, and falling in a heap still clipped in to the left.

Just ordered a kmc x10 73 from crc for £12 , so will give that a try. only difference is nickel coating to my current one and at that price its cheap. Also ordered a couple of links for emergency too.
