Road Bike recommendations

After 15 years of sterling service, my trusty old mountain/all purpose bike really needs replacing. The play in the pedals, slightly twisted handlebars, limited working gears and front sprockets hitting the selector both side as it rotates have become more than just character now. Although it was much better today after a drenching in wd40!

So... I'm looking at road bikes as recently I've been doing quite a lot of cycling to keep fit on roads/cycle paths and not done any mountain biking for years. 60km ride today which I think will be fairly normal, prob be doing this 1-2 times a week with shorter rides interspersed.

Been doing a fair bit of research today, and went and tried a few for size so think I know roughly what I'm after.. to which end can anybody comment on the 3 linked below? They seem very good value compared to the shops I've been in today (£1-300 better value) for very similar spec bikes.

Well, looking at all 3, they are all pretty much the same. The slight step up in cost between each buys you an extra cog on the rear and then slightly better wheels.

They will all ride and feel about the same, but the Felt maybe stands out as a marginally better bike although you can't go wrong with any. Bike buying wisdom is buy the best bike you can realistically afford, so maybe go for the Avanti?
Given all of that, I have a Mekk, although a higher model, and can say that it is a great bike.

Sorry, didn't really answer the question! Maybe try some out, or go and look at some. You may find another that you like instead?

Giant Defy. Slightly more laid-back geometry than a pure racing bike, for greater stability and comfort.

Also has a tad more tyre clearance end even clearance for mudguards if you plan to ride in the wet / cycle paths and don't want to get yourself and the bike covered with dirty water...

The Boardman road bikes in Halfords seem to be pretty good value for money as well.

Cube bikes offer good specs for the money.

I've ridden 8000 or so miles in 2 years on my Defy 1 and have loved it. I've upgraded the wheels and pads and it is now a good fast but comfortable bike. I've nothing to compare it against though other than my CX bike!
