Evening all,

My rear hub is making a nasty grinding noise. It doesn't do it when pedalling, only when freewheeling, and it doesn't do it all the time.

Sod's law says that of course when I tried to film it, it only did it occasionally, but sometimes it will do it constantly for the whole time I'm freewheeling (although might then not do it at all the next time I freewheel), and it sounds horrible!

My first assumption would've been the bearings, but there's absolutely no play in the wheel, and presumably it would also grind when pedaling?

For background info, the bike is 2 years old, has done 2k miles, and the wheels are Fulcrum Racing 7s.

Sounds like the bearings in your freehub rather than the wheel bearings. Ive only ever had one fail before and it is simpler to buy a new unit rather than trying to repair.

My knowledge is a little out of date, but wheel bearings are easy to change but freehub bearings are nigh on impossible. Buy another and replace the whole unit.

It can't be the freehub bearings as when you freewheel these do not move on a Fulcrum 7 hub. It's probably something caught between the freehub and the wheel, easy to check, just get two 17mm spanners and undo the two nuts each side of the wheel, you'll find that only one actually comes out of the wheel. Once you have one nut in your hand, remove the spacer that was behind the nut, grab the wheel in one hand and the cassette in the other and pull them apart. Look for any crap in there, clean it out and re-grease.

Possibly a little more in-depth tutorial is available here, I know it's for a Racing 5, but the hubs are the same.

Still my main route, though I now almost always ride it on my Boardman, which has 35c CX tyres, mudguards and paniers, so generally not quite as quick. Far more civilised in wet weather though! hehe

One of the advantages of being a fat old knacker is that the leg muscles required to haul my 120kg up any sort of incline means that I'm generally in the top 20-25% on any the flatter segments.

If I could just summon up the willpower to lose 4 or 5 stone, I might even contemplate entering some old knacker cyclocross races!

The London Summer Series kicks off in a few months, get yourself down there, it's great fun.

My kids' cycle club enters Cyclocross races (not sure where) which apparently a fair few parents go for (in the senior races, of course!) as well, so I'll find out where they are, but I'd certainly look to shift some of my 120kg first!!! biggrin

Races are in the grounds of Bethlem Royal Hospital and at the Herne Hill Velodrome, so not too far away from you.

I raced in five of the six rounds last year and had a great time, finished 9th Vet in series. Fat lads welcome.
