Doing the Carten 100 tomorrow and the forecast is not looking good! In light of the near-gale force headwinds and pissing rain, I'm trying to get as prepared as possible. I've got a rain jacket to protect my top half from the wind and rain, but was considering getting out and lunch time and investing in a pair of waterproof overshoes as wet feet will get really uncomfortable after a while. But, although they might stop the rain directly getting at my feet, I'm wondering if the rain water will just run down my legs and in through the top of the overshoes, thus ending up with wet feet in any case?

Generally the water will eventually get in but the shoe covers will offer wind protection even when wet.

I have a potentially very wet ride coming up on Sunday (Fred Whitton) and can't decide what to wear. Probably Roubaix shorts with knee warmers, vest, Gabba and probably full waterproof jacket.

Similar to how you are allowed a slope on a bridge, but you're not allowed a in your armour wink

ETA: Back to the question...

...I use neoprene overshoes. The coated type, that try to keep the water out, but when the water finally gets through, the insulation properties of the neoprene mean that your wet feet stay warm, and they are pretty windproof too. I can deal with wet, and I can deal (to a lesser extent) with cold, but cold AND wet? Forget it, I'm ready to fold when that happens wink

I used to use some Decathlon overshoes, given to me free by a colleague of my wife, until I wore them out. (He'd bought them on a trip to France, but they turned out to be too small). After that I switched to Endura...

I rode the dorset bike ride the other weekend which was 66 mile & nearly all of it in the rain.
I put the over shoes on and had leg warmers with shorts.
Eventually the feet got wet but not saturated even with the spray off the front wheel. The neoprene kept the wind off and they were acceptably warm throughout the ride.

So i'd say put them on there's nothing to loose.

Overshoes and shorts is a big no-no. It just looks wrong.
If its warm enough for shorts, then you don't need windproof/waterproof overshoes.

At this time of year, for a wet and potentially long ride I would go with a lightweight shell, shorts, knee warmers and jersey with armwarmers.
It's a combo that gives lots of options.

I rode my MTB all winter like this, surprised how dry my feet were. Just couldn't be arsed with putting on the over shoes.
