Scared stless and feel quite unprepared (well for the swim mainly). It's just a sprint so I'm hoping I can wing it...

Any tips or advice?!

Buy a sleeveless top and some long socks and make sure to put your helmet on backwards. Make sure to fit some bottles behind your saddle, and tape some energy bars to your top tube.

Then spend the next five years, at least, telling everyone that you do triathlons.

Can anyone find that video of some female tri-athletes all falling over when trying to mount their bikes after transition? I've not been able to find it frown

Is it an open water swim? To be honest a mass open water start is probably one of the hardest thing to deal with in triathlons.

If you are doing it in a pool, then its all good.

Either which way try and concentrate on getting a good rythem. If its a mass start, then be prepared to take a foot r a fist in the face several times until the field spreads out.

If you know you can swim at 25 minute/1500m pace, then start towards the front, if the mass start terrifies you to your living soul and you aren't a strong swimmer, start towards the back and to one side. You will find it easier.

I know it's in jest. And I see people out running who similarly have loads of gear on for what I hope (but suspect is not) a long 15+ mile run.

Conversely, these "cyclists" that ride to the top of a hill then stop at the café? What's that all about? I did a sportive last year (only 100Km boxedin) and all these people stopping at the food/rest stops. No Triathlete stops until Transition! We eat, drink, and piss on the bike! And we ride TT bikes EVERYWHERE with the huge gears. None of this 39/28 nonsense!

wink

Pool luckily, I think I'd need to drastically improve my stroke to be confident enough in an open water group!

Definitely gotta put my helmet on backwards , brilliant pic haha

You need some coaching to improve your swim stroke. Swimming is all about technique, over and above fitness. Last year I couldn't swim two lengths front crawl without stopping. I have had 4/5 sessions with a coach and I am now swimming a 400m TT in 6:20.

Where about in the country are you? If you are near MK this guy is the best:

He can help with cycling and running too

Nope, it was Newmarket. Went surprisingly well, smashed the cycling leg at-least. I may have been bitten by the bug!

Well done. A friend did one at Crystal Palace. I presume they are all different distances as hers was a 5k run, 20k cycle and 750m swim. I'd be fine with the land based stuff but it takes me about half an hour to swim a length at the local baths and I have to have a few rests along the way. Hate swimming.

I did my first triathlon last year, and felt very similar.

I just turned up and kind of copied what other people were doing, especially when setting up transition etc. Also, everyone is always really friendly (apart from the few that take it far too seriously).

A pool swim will help I guess, I've only ever done open water, I actually prefer it I think (buoyancy from the wetsuit stops you drowning).

Yeah I think the sprints are usually those standard distances but they'd cut them down to make it easier for noobs at Newmarket - the swim was 300m, 4k run and a 22k cycle. If I do another one, I'll definitely be looking at some swimming lessons before hand - had to resort to breaststroke smile

Yeah the atmosphere was a bit of a shock to me - really friendly. I'd expected a lot of very competitive guys but I was congratulated when overtaking someone on the cycle! I'd definitely like to try an open water swim when my strokes up to scratch.

Pool-based triathlons tend to have a shorter swim in order to get the whole wave through that stage.
