I'm on the brink of buying myself a roadbike with the intention of doing a few events like this, but I got to wondering what the benefit of them is - i.e wheres the added value?

Having done at least one whats your view on these wiggle (and others like them) events ?

Done the NF sportive a couple of times, excellent event on good roads and great scenery despite the neanderthal locals.

However what a couple of years ago was a reasonable £20-ish quid is rapidly approaching £40 and while I appreciate the free energy products and copious sweats and cakes I feel its a big leap from an Audax for just a few arrow signs being the difference.

If you've never done one then you should definitely try, its quite an experience riding with 1500 people if you're used to riding on your own!

You've got to be careful taking these idiots on, though. I got a slapped wrist last year from someone at PH towers for posting the ringleader's address on here. Only, I didn't. I just 'quoted' across the details from her own site. Which, ironically, is a tourist site, which carries a good deal of bike/cycling related advertising. Want even greater irony? A lot of the 'protesters' against the 'new fangled' bicycle contraptions that are 'ruining the Forest' live in relatively recent housing estates which, when they were built, were (you guessed it ) protested AGAINST for destroying the character of the villages they now surround, and were built upon open forest land. A bigger, more obvious bunch of NIMBYs you couldn't wish to meet.
