Beginner road bike advice

Hi all,

Looking for some advice about which road bike to buy. I'm planning on using it to do a bit of fitness and don't want to spend the thousands that some hardened racers spend. If it goes well I'd like start riding with a club eventually. I have a budget of about £300.

Any advice much appreciated.

New or 2nd hand?

If new, I would be looking at Decathlon, or maybe the Carrera stuff from Halfords. My sister in law has a Carrera which was about that much. It's heavy, even compared with a £500 bike, but its pretty sturdy.

She's planning on using it for commuting purposes when she's saved up a bit for something a bit nicer.
