Old Ultegra or new Sora?

A colleague has an old US Postal liveried Trek carbon bike he bought second hand recently. It has an Ultegra groupset in 3x9 configuration.

The right hand shifter is knackered, when you push the paddle the lever moves too, so it needs to be replaced, they're not available new, so the options are to source a used one, or switch to new Sora shifters instead. It appears the cost is about the same for both options, so would you be getting a 6+ year old used Ultegra shifter, or brand new lower end Sora ones?

I'm inclined to say Sora because they won't be baggy and worn, but might be totally wrong!

My 105 shifter did that, all it needed was the gear paddle prising away from the brake lever a little. I think that the gear paddle had been hitting the bars under braking and had been pushed into the brake.

Get the shifter off the bike, try the WD40 flush (minus the rubber hood!) and then the hot oil flush if that doesn't work.

I'd be inclined to go for new Sora or newish 9-speed Tiagra as a replacement if this doesn't work.

I'd get a used 10 speed one (more of them about) and one of these

Then if you want to upgrade to 10 speed in the future you're a good chunk of the way there. OR, just upgrade to 10 speed now.

I'd probably go for the best second hand 105 set I could find

Yep 10 speed (or 11 but I doubt freehub could take it) 105 for hidden cables. Shifters, cassette, chain, rear mech new for about £180 or whole groupset for £300.

New Sora is fine though if you don't mind the cables or shift indicators.
