Cheapest dedicated option out there for strava recording?

Following a very successful litmus test on the road bike, Jr has declared road riding a big thumbs up, first ride of 32.4 mi, not too shabby!.
He wants to record his rides and progression, I'm all for it but also funding it and having just realised I now have two (or four if you count our mountain biking) habits to fund on a limited budget, what are the best priced options?
I'm using a Garmin 800 so we have all the mapping/routing options covered as we will only be riding together for the foreseeable future (he's 12).
So looking at GPS recording capable units either bike mounted or watch, not fussed about brand just reliable data acquisition.

I guess anything that can produce a gpx or similar is sufficient, but would think you want something that does proper 1 sec recording and can be uploaded easily. That forerunner might well be the one, wearable gadget is a plus for a 12 year old.

Don't blame you. I was about to ask a similar Question due to doing too many rides and the Strava app on my phone stating I haven't moved yet

Hmm interesting, not for him as I am only considering ones with a display, as he's going to want to check his stats as he goes or at least at the cake stop; for long distance stuff though one of those could be very useful. Anything over 200k and I'm using a USB battery stick into the Garmin but not having a screen must do wonders for battery life...
