Mtb for under £850?

Trying to help a friend who is after an MTB. Im a bit out of the loop since going to a road bike. What worth looking at for under £850? He's a returning rider after many years out of the saddle so imagine it would cover most XC stuff. He never was one for throwing himself down crazy trails
Loads of choice. But I'd head to Evans first for sizing and to check out their own Pinnacle Ramin 29ers which are top value and have been very well received. Ramin 1 is a steal at £400. With a bit of budget creep though for £999 the new Giant Stance 2 650b full susser has to be considered.
I've become a bit evangelical about these, although I've nothing to do with the company...

Was just reading in MBUK yesterday a test at about this price range. Top choice was the Saracen Mantra Trail and next was a Canyon Grand Canyon.
Personally I'd be looking at a Cube Acid 29er at this price, or perhaps an Orange Clockwork (spec on the Orange is a bit poorer compared to the Cube but it'll do the job).
