Pedals/Cleat systems

Over the years i've been fairly repetitive with my choice of pedls/cleats SPD's for mountain bike "Look" for road.

I've just ordered a new Velomobile and want to use a different system.

I need them to be:

Light

Able to walk in them without wearing the cleat out easily.

I've seen the SPDR SL series which look ok, but are there any other systems that i should contemplate, and what experience of these do you have?

Whatever you do don't go for the time iclic 2 system.

They're almost unusable after two weeks with hardly any walking at all. The cleats are made of cheese.

Whilst I'm not averse to change, if you've no problems with your current system(s), then...why look for something different?

Be aware that were WAS SPD-R and there's now SPD-SL. IIRC "R" was an old two-bolt road system that's long since died. Shimano road stuff is now SPD-SL, with the same bolt pattern shared between other three-bolt pedals/cleats.

I used Shimano stuff (SPD-SL for road, SPD for town and MTB) myself: the most durable by far, for both pedals and cleats.

What he said. If you want to be able to walk in a pair of "road" shoes then your best best is some Shimano Touring shoes that use recessed SPD cleats for example RT32s or RT82s.

Powers of levitation i don't have unfortunately , so being able to walk a small distance without wearing the cleat out quickly eg Look cleats wear amazingly quickly on tarmac/ concrete without rubber covers.

I'm fully used to the "duck walk" with both pairs of current shoes having carbon fibre soles, so it really is durability of the cleat even over a short distance i'm looking for.

A work colleague has SPD-SL's and he's decided to change to SPD as he currently has to change out of this shoes to talk to/from the bike sheds. I use SPD with MTB shoes and can walk fine without wearing them out.

infact, last Tuesday when my bike was stolen I wandered all around bath, got horribly pissed, got 2 trains home and a mile walk from the station in them, no major problems other than not getting home until midnight and apparently consuming 2 McDonalds meals along the way...

Plus I've got a wonky leg so there's no way I could walk in road shoes anyway. I've go winter/summer shoes and I can use either on any of my four bikes with clip in pedals. Makes sense to me

Speedplay Frog system? Pedals and cleats extremely light esp. ti version. No problem walking, use on both road and MTB

Speedplay zero's for road and spd's on mtb. Frogs in mud don't seem to be that great.

I use SPDs for commuting and pottering about. I don't know of any system to touch them for that purpose. Easy to clip in and out, easy to walk in the shoes, and I haven't bought a new set of cleats in two years.

I bought some Shimano cleat covers for my SPDSL cleated shoes. They are fantastic. I can walk about even on cobbled surfaces, and they even have a 'tread pattern' (like a tyre) on them, for if its wet. Best 13 quid I've spent in ages. I've not worn a pair of cleats out, in several months now.
