A helmet for road and MTB use. Any recommendations?

I'm just getting my lardy arse back onto a bike after many years, just road riding so far on my old Cannondale M900. My old Giro Exodus is way overdue for retirement, the padding having totally disintergrated!

I want something Snell approved that I can use both on and off road, so probably with a removeable peak, any suggestions? Not worried about cost, but it must be comfortable and not look too 'dorky'!

I'd get 2. A dedicated road and MTB. Road wise I can't praise Kask enough but have just got a Giro Atmos which if anything is better. I'd get a cheap Giro beater for the MTB say 35-40 quid with a peak.

MET make some decent looking helmets with removable peaks, but don't get hung up on having a 'road' helmet without a peak.

For years I had just one lid, a MET (model unknown) with a clip-on peak. I very rarely removed it, it just wasn't worth the bother. It was good, though, because you could tuck the headstrap for an LED head torch behind the peak to stop it from riding up the shell and falling off.

I finally gave in and bought a 'road' helmet when I became a bit of a tart, matching the helmet colour to the bike, and wearing Lycra, etc. It also meant that each lid got a 'drying out' break between rides. You can get by with just the one helmet, and this 'No Peaks' "rule" for road bikes is just bks. Cycling caps under helmets look far sillier, and achieve the same purpose. Don't spend money you don't need to spend on an extra lid, spend it on bling for the bike, or buy a PH long sleeve jersey with the cash instead

Don't bother buying 2, it's a waste of money. My Giro Savant does the job quite nicely on the Road Bike or the MTB.

I'd buy one rather than two.

Good luck finding Snell certified, but they'll all be EN1078. For extra protection look for MIPS tech models e.g Poc.

Dorkiness is generally subjective and at all events is better than disfigurement should you be unlucky.

I just bought one of these as had been getting neck ache on the road bike wearing my peaked Giro MTB helmet. It cured the neck ache for me so I'd go with the no peak for road rule. On which basis if you only want one helmet buy a road helmet.

Thats exactly the problem I was getting using my peaked Giro on road. Thanks everyone for your advice, it does look like I'll go for a road helmet for both disciplines.

Bit of an update. Went to Beeline Bikes in Oxford today, tried on a POC which was indeed superb, but at £180 with 15% discount, SWMBO freaked out! So ended up with a Kask Vertigo that is available currently with a £65 trade-in against any old helmet.
