New wheels

Ok so I have a budget of no more than £150 for a new set of wheels, so far I'm tempted by a pair of Mavic Aksium's :

But I've also looked at Fulcrum 7's and Campagnolo (various different models).
Now I know Fulcrums are made by Campagnolo but I'mm not sure whether I should play it safe with the Mavics or go for something different?
It needs to be a Shimano fitment (9spd) so I'm open to suggestions as I've been looking for days and I still cant decide!

18 quid more gets you onto Fulcrum 5s. This would be where my money would go.

I would love to get the Fulcrum 5s but the ones on merlin website are Campagnolo fitment and I can't stretch to the Fulcrum 5s anywhere else!


Any other suggestions?

Does any one have good/bad experiences with the G3 spoke pattern on Campagnolo wheels?

Try Wiggle for Fulcrum 5s

I ride Campag Zondas which are G3, I'm 82kgs and ride on all sorts of road surfaces, no issues here.

Fulcrum 5s for £168 here I've used bikediscount.de a few times and they are as good as Wiggle and CRC. The DT Swiss R24s are worth a look too.

What wheels do you have on your bike at the moment? Unless they are knackered then the chances are they'll be as good as the entry level Mavics/Fulcrums.

I'm using shimano R501 wheels at the moment but I've started using the bike to get to work and back everyday and fancied having a slightly better set for "special rides"

Unless it is a 1500/2K + bike I bet the racing 5s/Mavics will be quite a bit better, that's what I have found.

Really impressed for the £115 I paid, I have Fulcrum 5s on another bike, I paid £220 for and the Shimanos seem stronger and better made. I have only done 100 miles on them but had a bad crash in the first 40 miles and they took a beating and were very out of shape, but trued up really well, couldn't believe they didn't get written off.

The reality is you probably won't be able to feel any difference between your shimanos and any of the £150 wheelsets you mentioned. My advice for what it's worth would be to keep riding the shimanos through winter. Put the £150 in a pot and keeping adding to the pot when you can. Come spring hopefully you'll have enough for some campag zondas which are the best vfm at under £300. You'll definitley feel the difference between these and your shimanos.

^^ that is great advice. I've had both fulcrum 5's and shimano 501 and there isn't much difference.

If you haven't already invested in a good set of tyres do so. As said by the above poster, save up and get a set of wheels which you'll definitely see an improvement with.
