On strava is there a way of finding riders who rode the same segments as you at the same time? Asking as I went out today and bumped into 2 riders who I thought would drop me on 1 of the drags into town but didn't. We formed a bit of a peleton and I rode for them for about 10 miles. Turns out they were trying to keep in zone 2 of their heart rates, which according to my gps still meant clipping along at 18mph on the flat!

I'd like to find them to thank them for giving me the pointers they did.

Copy the url from your Strava activity (just the activity, though - no clicking on a particular segment or anything).

Paste the url into the activity box at the top right of this page... http://labs.strava.com/flyby/

Click the 'View' button next to the text box.

This will bring up a map, with a list of strava users who were out at the same time as you. Your 'icon' will be at the top of the list, with other riders below it. You need to tick the box next to their name, then it will display their route (or the portion of it that was ridden during your activity) as a different coloured line. It also shows where you passed (or 'flew by') each other, and how much of the route was shared. Press play, adjust the speed of playback, and zoom in and out. I don't think it allows 'satellite view' of the map, but it absolutely depends upon the riders you passed out on the ride a) having a Strava account and GPS; and b) they must have uploaded their ride for it to show up.

You can use it on your rides/activities, and you can also paste any other athlete's rides into it. It makes for a bloomin' busy screen if you view a sportive or a race with it. The only drawback I've found is having to check/tick all the other athletes if there are a lot of them.

If the riders you are looking for show up on 'fly-by' then just click on their user ID and it will take you straight to their Strava account, possibly even direct to that ride, so you can make comment, ask questions, 'follow' them or just give some Kudos.

Not mine, but here's another Strava athlete's race from today... http://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/#219947304 ...tick ALL the names, speed up the playback, and play the Benny Hill theme in your head wink

Cheers all, not showing up yet. Will keep an eye on this one, as they were really quite helpfull and gave me my first experiance of drafting, it really does make life easier and faster! I was on the brakes a few times as I was going faster than I thought and got a bit too close too quickly.

It all started out as a bit of banter with the rear marker joking my lights were keeping his backside warm! They were only running at 800 lumens each (was a tad foggy)

It's a good idea to keep looking. Some users don't upload every time they ride.

Equally, though, they might never show up if they aren't on Strava. I tried it once, looking for a rider who lost his rear light on a local woodland trail. Whoever it was never uploaded a ride for that night, so I couldn't return it to him, so now I have half of a 'Giant' brand rear LED light - the half with the batteries, PCB, and red lens, which was still flashing away in the leaf litter. I presume the black plastic rear part of the light is still attached to the bracket on the bike.

I also tried it looking for the owner of a Sportful 'Hotpack' lightweight jacket that I found blowing around on some local Heathland. No joy there either. Strava isn't as widely used as you might think, because there are a lot of people riding who don't feel the need for the GPS gadget required to use it.

You don't need to thank anyone that actively told you they were doing a 'zone 2 ride' that is about the most cringe thing I've ever heard biggrin

18mph on the flat, especially in a group, is not particularly fast!

It is for that fat, unfit, ex smoker!

Its not the so much the speed that suprized me, it was how much effort we weren't putting in to achieve it.

Without being obtuse that is because on the flat it doesn't take much effort smile

I will check strava labs in a second. I deep fried two chaps this evening who were having a race among themselves.

Deep fried? Now who is cringe?

Joking, to tell a stranger "we're on a zone 2 ride" is toe curling.
