Cyclocross Frame

I quite fancy building up a bike based on a cyclocross frame for general winter use - any recommendations for a frame to start from? Needs to be in the region of £500.

A Kinesis CrossLight Pro 6 frame can be picked up for under £500 and would probably high on my list if this were my budget. A guy I race close to has one of these in white and it always looks lovely before the race but I think I would have chosen green.

There are some chinese carbon frames out there for £300-£350 on Ebay.

CaadX is worth a shout too. The bike has been around for a while, so there should be a few old bikes on Ebay.

I have the Planet X XLS CX bike, but to be honest, the frame is pretty heavy at 1150g (ish), so I wouldn't recommend it as a good base for a build.

I've recently picked up a Pro 6 to use as a winter road bike and I really like it. Looks superb in green too!

Does look very good in green. I wouldn't trust the Chinese generic carbon frames though - without any evidence of quality control I don't feel I could take the risk.....

1150 is heavy? What's light ticking in at the moment? Thought a kg wasn't a bad figure for a road frame let alone a cx

I love the look of these - if I were building something up, it would probably be one of them.

I know it's not a cyclocross frame, but a 'lightness' comparison was asked for, and it's what I'm considering as my new road bike...

...Trek's new Émonda SL is a 1,050g frame (size, unhelpfully, wasn't specified, but I suspect it's 56cm).

In SL6 flavour, with full Ultegra group, it produces a claimed complete bike weight of 7.39kg (size 56cm) ,or 7.74kg (size 58cm)...

...so I wouldn't say that was a lard-arse. There's oodles of room to put it on a diet, too, if you want to spend money on aftermarket 'weightweenie' wheels and bling. Going up to the Dura-Ace groupset loses 330g for an extra £800. Lighter wheels (the Bontrager Race wheels are easily a 1700g or 1800g wheelset) at around the £500 to £600 mark would drop another 300g at least, then you are on a sub 7kg bike.

I don't really know how this is relevant to cyclocross though, as I've not really been tempted toward that segment of the market at all.

I hadn't thought of it in that way, so fair point. As a reference point the Cannondale SuperSix Evo is about 900g and the High Mod is 700g. Latest Dogma Think 2 (what ever the hell its called!) is about the same.

What I would say is that the Rose ali frame is only 50g heavier thn Planet X's CX frame! CaadX will be light too.

I'd say the Kinesis is probably a good balance of weight/cost. Maybe look at Rose too? You won't be able to look at them in a shop, but as a manufacturer they have a good rep.
