cheap'ish light MTB wheels

Guys,
Looking to add a bit of lightness to my bike.
Currently has standard carrera wheels which aren't that light.
Budget of max £150.
Can't decide between these:

Superstar

Or
Mavic

Use is mainly XC & trail centres.
Any thoughts on either of the above?

Superstar ones are tubless ready - only real difference I can see.

I would prefer the Mavics, just because of spares availability . There has been hubs obsolete for freehubs on Superstars, recently and apparently there bearings aren't the best , but seem good when better ones fitted. Tubeless isn't an issue with a stans valve and some gorilla tape on the Mavics. I have 7 mtbs and 5 run this rather than proper tubeless rims and have done for years.

If you fancy learning a new skill why not try building your own? I bought a pair of second hand Hope Pro2 hubs from eBay, some Pacenti CL25 rims from Planet X, and some DT Swiss spokes from Rose Bikes. Total cost was about £130, for a pair of class wheels.

What size wheels and what axle are you looking for? I have a set of unused Mavic Crossride in 26" for sale. Front is 15mm and rear is X12, but they can be used with other axles using adapters I believe.

I'd second that, although I used my existing Hope XC hubs and went for the Pacenti TL28s. Building them up was quite therapeutic, although I did get my LBS to give them a final check and true.

I have a few pairs of ss, mavics, and hopes. Ss are very light and the builds are nice. Bearings in them are top spec as well - big Japanese firm whose name escapes me. However, they're a crap winter wheel and are a pig to work on. Their seals are poor. Hopes are a doddle to work on but still don't have the best weather seals. For me mavics win hands down. I've never once had to open up a mavic wheel and I'm on my second set on my winter mtb. Tbey are unbeatable value for money.

I did it over the course of a couple of evenings in front of the telly with my wife after the kids were in bed, so there was no conflict. As you're building up new stuff as well, there's no mud and crud to get on the carpet to cause conflict either!
