Cycle navigation apps for iPhone?

Does anyone use one? I have a spare iphone and would like to get a handlebar mount and use it to navigate.

When going on a new ride on small country lanes there is nothing worse than having to stop at every junction, get phone out of bag and check where I am / where I'm going.

I want something where I can omit the exact route (not just take most direct route between two points) and then just a very simple and clear display.

I imagine this is how the garmin devices work? Surely there is something for the iPhone?

I believe Google maps does this or Strava itself.

I have tried Bikehub which uses openstreetmap and you can choose fastest, balanced and quietest routes. However you need to be careful as it takes you on cycle networks which are not always tarmac roads. I found this out on my first ride on my road bike that was 50% off road!

I now use viewranger. I can plot my own routes, sync them to the viewranger app and then follow the track on my phone on my handlebars. It doesn't flag up a turn left or turn right arrow, but is very easy to follow. It also allows you to record your ride as a gpx file which you can upload to Strava if that is what you are after.

Quad lock to hold it and Strava's routes system would work but it will eat your batteries, so take a battery booster with you... or learn your routes off a map and remember them :-)

I've started using ViewRanger recently. I've uploaded other people's maps in gpx format so I can follow new routes, and when I ride with others I record the route.

I've ordered a Tigra Sport Power Plus case/mount for my iphone, it comes with a big battery built in so it extends the life of the phone significantly. I've noticed there is an arrow on the screen but before I knew it it was pointing backwards. I think it's somehting to do with the waypoints of the route, maybe whether or not you pass precisely over it, or I think I spotted a button that said advance to next waypoint. Need to read up on it!

I was having a discussion with a guy I ride with about the merits of using a phone or a dedicated gps unit....two days later he went over the handlebars and smashed a fairly new Garmin. I'm going to try to mount my phone on the top tube near the headset so it's not as exposed as on the bars but I doubt it'll work.
