Cycle touring the Shetland Islands

Hi,

Usually do one tour a year and with only a C2C ride planned (Whitehaven to Sunderland) for this year with some work colleagues thought i ought to sort out a decent ride in the summer.

I live in the West Midlands and thinking about catching a train to Aberdeen from Birmingham and a overnight ferry to the Shetland Islands, spending 3 days on the island cycling and either camping or B&B.

Just wondered if anybody on here has cycled the Shetland Islands, would be interested in their stories.

I have done most of the Scottish Islands inc the Outer Hebrides so i thought i might try a little further away this time, excited YES !!!

One word to be aware of with the Shetlands.

Wind.

Make sure anyone you go with is good for draughting behind!

Another word of warning about the Shetlands. If the ground looks solid, don't trust your eyes at all. Its full of peat bogs.



As I well know to my cost and memories some 30ish years later! Oh and every tree is sub 4 feet tall and grows at 45 degrees to the vertical!

So it's a bit windy then !

I would like to get to the most northernly point accesable by road or track and then back again taking in some other parts of the island.

I would only have 3 days on the island and thinking about it i will B&B this time to keep the weight down (my bike weighed 6 stones fully laiden last tour) so i should be able to move about a bit quciker and not have to bother about cooking my own meals.

Would be nice to link up with a couple of people on the island who can show me around once finished cycling for the day,
