Health warning - mucky roads

There's an article in this weeks Cycling, warning of the potential health hazard associated with riding without mudguards around farm lanes and the like. The wet roads can contain nasties in the water. Riders have been infected with gastro-lurgi from bug infested water thrown up from tyres.

I always keep my gob shut when riding through the splashy bits. Occasionally have a rinse out / spit session too, not nice.

I do 99% of my riding on my own, but rode with a large group on Saturday for the Wiggle No Excuses, and at one of the food stations, I bumped into my Dad. My face was so splattered with road muck, my own Dad didn't recognise me at first!

During the ride, I did think "I wonder how many of us are going to end up ill from this!"

Pretty sure you can pick up a nasty eye infection from sheep st as well.

I had some dog muck thrown onto my drink bottle on a mtb ride last year, only found out once I had took a drink in the dark, the taste and smell was horrible, no amounting of spitting helped, two days of very nasty toilet trips.

Be careful with bottles on the down tube as well, clear them before drinking. Grim.

One of my riding buddies picked up a cowst bug last year - a good few weeks of feeling under the weather before it was diagnosed and dealt with.

I did have a bottle with a protective oap for winter road rides - must get another one.
