I wouldn't worry too much, I can't say I've wasted any time looking deeply at the article or the comments (because frankly it's boring) but it looks like another warble from a pair of fat cat Jag drivers giving voice to their upper middle class chums who've had to drive their Range Rovers with a little more care and attention recently. What with the recent increase in non-tax paying, anti-social, more evil than Satan himself, cycling scum (myself included)...

Tbh, I've only been back in the saddle for 9 months-ish and already when I see things like this it very quickly blurs into 'blah blah blah...'

No offence, JackP1, but that's just some local council ttwaffles mouthing off at a committee meeting. It isn't "happening" and it won't happen. The article is a complete crock of st and the proposals are entirely unenforceable and unworkable. Even if Cambridge City Council can get these idiotic 'rules' passed at a meeting of the full council, how will they ever enforce them? What if I ride my bike from, say, Saffron Walden (in Essex) through Cambridge, without registration, or a helmet? What law will be invoked to charge me? The rest of the country would have different rules (or no additional rules) and it is impossible for a single City Council to exist wholly within it's own bubble of isolated ignorance. So that means they cannot fine 'outsiders' for transgressions, so effectively there'll be two sets of rules for cyclists within Cambridge city limits. The draconian anti-cyclist laws for 'locals' and the current (national) legislation that governs everyone else. That's been tried before, but apartheid failed too. Nope, unless such legislation is passed at national government level, it's not going to happen. Given that successive national governments have been seen to encourage an increase in physical activity, especially cycling, for it's aggregated health benefits, sustainability and low environmental impact, I cannot see that there'll be any stomach at Westminster for such nonsense. Especially as there'd likely not be many votes in it for any of the (electable) parties.

Move along, please. Nothing to see here...

Right up there with the 1980s fad of Borough Councils declaring themselves "Nuclear Free Zones" - in terms of local councilors having a missplaced view of both their authority and self-importance.

Go back to making sure the bins get emptieed and leave road traffic legislation to those who have some idea of what they're talking about.
