Sit Bone Pain Relief...
Discussion
I've started suffering from a bit of Sit Bone Pain after a couple of hours+ of cycling, it seems to depend on the type of riding I do as to whether or not it affects me - more after XC / Road riding where I guess I am using the saddle more...
Its not something that has affected me in the past but from what I have read on the Web, it could be down to a bit of weight loss and therefore less natural padding?
I initially thought my padded shorts may have past their best so have purchased new which have made little difference - I also read about "double bagging" wearing 2 pairs of Padded shorts but this doesn't sound like it will be too comfortable...
Has anyone been through this before, whats been the solution?

I never has any pain either on sit bones until using a hire bire for a 5-6hr ride. I stupidly didn't bring my own on holiday, when it started hurting after 3 hours I still was 70km away from home.
The pain is fading, but occasionally flares up now on my old saddle.
I have gone for a different saddle from Fizik one the new build as that was fine on another hire bike in December for 4 hr climbing sessions seated in Tenerife.
If new shorts aren't making a difference and it was ok before then you need to eliminate what changes could have occurred.

Thanks for the replies.
Bike position wise - when I purchased the road bike recently (Giant TCR with factory fitted saddle) I had a bike fit as part of the purchase - not an in depth one though, my 29er (Giant XTC1 with Charge Spoon) has never had a bike fit but always felt comfortable. Neither Saddles are particularly worn.
I've purchased some on-one bib shorts and some other just shorts - previously I'd always worn the Endura padded shorts or a set of dhb bib short - always with baggies over the top.
I'll double check saddle levels but to the eye they all look good.
My local riding is relatively flat so there isn't always a need to get out of the saddle I find. Riding local trail centers I don't get the pain, maybe because I am out of the saddle more.
The pain seems to be getting less lately, but still there just wondered if time would be a solution?
The other changing factor is mileage, to date this year I have almost achieved last years mileage with only 4.25 months gone (1200+ to date, I think I got to circa 1500 in all of 2014)..

I'd be tempted to spend a bit more on Bib shorts and get the best you can, I buy loads of cheap stuff, but always make sure my bib shorts are good.
I was going to say have you increase mileage. Could be that your body is just adjusting to the increased mileage, hence the discomfort.
I was also going to say bet its loads of flat riding! I always try and get out the saddle often to relieve soreness and use different muscles, obviously on flat rides this is harder! I find 80 mile flat rides harder than 80 mile hilly rides, I find it hard and uncomfortable to be in the same position all the time and my pace suffers. After 80 miles of flat I will be sagging at the back of the group, 80 miles of hills and I'll be on the front all the way!
I think it is the increased mileage more than anything else.
I suffer from a similar pain on longer rides, and have just bought a new bike so can't really tell yet if it is better or worse. I've splashed out on some Morvelo Unity bibs, which won a review of 15 or so shorts for comfort, £90 normally but got them for just over £50. They seem a bit better but because of the bike change I can't be 100% sure.
I've been told to keep moving about on the saddle, get out of it, even pedal backwards down hills to get the muscles working the other way/get the blood flowing into the opposite muscles.
I may look into the Selle Italia fitting system too. Had a Specialized bike fit last year, as a result tried a Fizik Arione for a week. Absloute murder for me on that bike; the discomfort that normally comes after 2-3 hours was coming in about 30 minutes! I stuck it out for a week because I was hoping to get used to it. Then tried an Alliante which was better, but had a Charge Spoon lying unused in the garage so now use that, as good as the Alliante if not better.
I did a charity ride at Goodwood last year and pushed myself harder for an hour than I ever have before, more or less stayed in one position. The pain in that area got worse and worse, then went through the roof, so much so I had to stop in half a lap (about 1.2 miles) and more or less fell off the bike onto the grass, I just could not move my legs in any direction. For 20 minutes I thought I would have to get an ambulance, but eventually the feeling came back and I was able to limp round a few more laps. Never experienced anything like it on the bike before and really want to prevent it happening again.

Been finding something similar myself recently. Lost a bit of weight and finding it a lot more uncomfortable on my saddles. All are Specialized Toupe and 143mm and never really had any issues with comfort in the past even though one of them is the carbon s-works 'razor blade'. Tried various decent quality bibshorts but none of them make any real difference. Would a different width saddle make a difference?

Yes, I get it from both these bikes - the XC riding I do from home is mainly on the XTC which is a mix of Forest Single Track, Fire Roads, Footpaths/river banks and Road - a 25mile loop can see me climb less than 100ft (Off topic - My Garmin may be wrong - riding this weekend with some guys from work we all rode the same 63mile Charity route my edge 200 showed an overall climb of 1900ft another with an edge 800 showed 2800ft!)I'd be tempted to spend a bit more on Bib shorts and get the best you can, I buy loads of cheap stuff, but always make sure my bib shorts are good.

I have another couple of bikes which I use elsewhere (Charge Spoon equipped) which I suffer less/no pain on, this may be because there more focused to fun riding where I'm not in the Saddle as much and rest more often...

Are you using any cream on your ass?
For me using that at the same time as purchasing Assos bibs was a revelation.
Although I do wonder if the pad compresses over time and wears out!
Rapidly increasing mileage may well have resulted in your body telling you!
I use Cream, but not all the time, it usually depends on the time I plan to spend on the bike and if I remember! For me using that at the same time as purchasing Assos bibs was a revelation.

I had a look at the Assos bibs, think i'd have to see them in a shop before spending that kind of money...
