So my BB has "a little" play and the chain rings are on the way to being worn out... Hmm- me thinks its tie to consider a compact with a twinkle in my eye :-)

But No... simply swapping the chain set while replacing the BB would be too simple, I have a square tapered BB so looks like a need a new type of BB but all the suitable chain sets come in about 4 or 5 different BB styles- what a mess!

Which BB style is the most future proof and compatible with fitting to a frame that had a square taper BB?

you can stick with square taper if you really want... still plenty of options out there such as this:-

alternatively, your frame should be 100% compatible with regular outboard bb cups (obviously checking whether you have english or italian threads) which means that any modern chainset will fit.

just steer clear of any of the oversized (BB30, BB86 and so on) or press-fit versions.

do be aware that you may also need to change your chain and probably the rear cassette too in order to avoid slippage as your drivetrain tends to wear at a similar rate.

I'd be amazed if the BB shell is not the standard 68mm width so all you will need are some new tools and you can simply remove the square taper bottom bracket and fit Shimano Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket cups which far from being the de facto standard, gives you plenty of opportunity when it comes to chooising the new chainset.

Take the opportunity to man maths yourself into a new groupset.

Obviously, why would you change a £7 BB when you can buy a £500 groupset, its a no brainer.

Have you had a sense of humour failure?

Us cyclists need no encouragement to man maths our way into new shiney gear.

New BB and chainset, you should also really change the chain, then you may aswel change the cassette too so it all wears nicely together, you're basically at replacing the groupset by then hehe

No but I forgot the ;-)

If we're changing chainrings, chain and cassette might as well get new cables, shifters and brakes- upgrade to Di2?

If the bike came with square taper then I've got £50 here that says it isn't wearing 11 speed compatible wheels, in which case it'll be much cheaper to sell the existing bike and buy an entire new one (than purchase a UN51).
