My 16 year old son is wanting a road bike, but like a lot of lads he doesn't really know whether he will like it or not, so I don't want to spend too much say up to £300.00.

Has anyone sampled the Halfords Carrera range?
Or do I go secondhand?
Or anything else worth considering?

I imagine it's much better than any else you would get at Halfords.

Will be miles better than Halfords.
Also check ebay/gumtree for second hand Islabikes. They'll keep their value well, so if you then sell it you won't lose much.

Decathlon are probably the best choice at that price point. Depending on how tall he is, these two are good options and the Saracen looks ace.

Was in a similar position to you a year ago, got my son a Specialised Allez off EBay. It had hardly been ridden (and if I'm honest I should make more time to drag him out on it) so it was as good as new. I know if him or I decide it isn't worth keeping it will be easy to sell and I'll get a good chunk back of what I paid for it.
