What ever am I doing…..this isn’t going to go well.

Suffering a bit of soreness in the undercarriage and around the man vegetable areas.

I’m nigh on 18 stone, 6ft 3”, 38” waist but usually wear 40-42 boxer shorts. Like them nice and roomy.

I’ve experimented with ordinary shorts, some lycra mamil shorts, some baggy Muddy Fox cycling shorts, all to no avail.

Today I substituted the boxers for a pair of what can only be described as briefs. Maybe a small improvement.

Bike saddle has a very grippy rubber cover, think this might be part of the issue so have experimented with a carrier bag to make it more slippy.

What is the style of underpants of the cycling cognoscenti?

Don't wear underpants. That will be your problem.

the problem is all those garments rubbing together causing discomfort due to hte seams being in the wrong places for riding a bike. As per the others, chamois cream and bibs, it feels a bit odd at first but cyclists are kinky buggers.

What they all said. Get something with a decent pad (bib shorts, baggies with it built in, baggies with a separate liner, whatever...) and wear nothing between yourself and the pad except chamois cream on longer rides.

The manufacturer of the pad has designed it specially to avoid putting seams and other rubbing points between you and the saddle. If you're wearing underpants of any description between yourself and the pad, you've undone all their hard work, and are suffering as a result.

As above, commando + cream only.... BUT- wait for the "soreness" to go before riding again, the time off the bike is almost as painful I must admit but once you have a sore you cannot "ride through it" (Unless you are in a month long French stage race and your being paid too :-)

At least here is a part of cycling that requires no special investment.

Just remember to bring underpants/boxers with you if you are commuting!

Last week I came to work fully lycra'd up because I was going straight to a race afterwards. Got to the office and realised I hadn't packed any boxers so had to spend all day at work commando. There is something strangely liberating/wrong about going to a meeting with no pants on and I was extra vigilant about making sure my flies were always zipped up!

I would've been even more vigilant in the actual act of zipping them up myself! hehe

Even more annoying, in my experience, is forgetting shoes. Tailored suit and bright white SPD shoes aren't the greatest look in the world! smile Turns out the lazy buggers who run the shoe shops in Covent Garden don't open until 10:00 either! irked

That was a worry!

I keep my work shoes under my desk so that I don't have that issue, they never leave, I even had a shoe polishing session on my lunch break recently.

On that note it might be worth keeping a pair of backup work pants in the drawer next to my meeting tie wink

A pair of rolled up football socks is against the rules too.

I normally keep a spare suit, shirts, underwear, shoes, ties, the whole lot in my locker at work. It was just on this occasion that I'd been out for a few beers after work the previous time I'd been in the office, and had grabbed my bike and kit then got the train home, and forgotten to take the shoes back in with me!

Why, are you Captain Skiddy behind closed doors?

Seriously- Commando and washed after every ride (shorts and privates) is only way to protect against soreness

Mrs Huntsman should be pleased you'll be keeping your gentlemen vegetables sparkling clean.

You wait until Rapha invent the Emperor's New Pants. Just an empty box, with a Rapha logo. A snip at £99.99.

Why, out of interest? If it makes it easier, don't think of them as shorts, just think of them as padded underpants! If you're wearing baggies over the top, that's just what they are anyway!

The disconcerting feeling of wearing a nappy goes away once you're on the saddle! hehe
