2012 trek madone 4.5 - basically standard but had for a few years and like. It's a triple but very rarely use smallest ring. I'd like a lighter bike and better wheels. Has 105 groupset and shifters.

Now I've basically got a specialised Tarmac but it's about 9 years old but has good wheels, ultegra gear and I would imagine is lighter. It was worth nearly twice as much as the trek was when both new.

Do I keep specialised and sell trek. Or move some components about?

Not bothered about n+1 etc! Just want one!

I wouldn't be surprised if 3 year old 105 is better or the same as 9 year old ultegra as they move the technology down the scale over the years or so I've heard

Sell the Tarmac, buy a new set of wheels, get a bike fit & replace any drive train bits which have worn.
At £215 these are excellent : Shimano Ultegra 6800 Wheelset

.... or sell both bikes & throw money at a new one if your not 100% happy with the Trek

Why don't you weigh them rather than imagining which is lighter...

I'd sell the older bike. 9 year old carbon frame probably weights the same as the current top ali bikes such as a Caad10.

Use the funds from the bike sale (£5-600 maybe?) and put it towards 11sp Ultegra (£450) and some decent wheels. Shimano latest Ultegra wheels are a bargain (As mentioned above)

Correct. I replaced my 6 year old ultegra shifters with 105 shifters a couple of years ago. The 105 is better.
