So my racing 5's developed some play - if you moved them from side to side you could feel a slight knocking.

Popped to LBS who agreed slight play and that tightening should sort but to speak to supplier 1st to ensure that they were happy for LBS to do this without invalidating warranty.

Spoke to supplier who was happy for me to take into LBS for a tighten and they would cover cost - all v reasonable.

Having got the wheel back from the LBS the play/knock has gone but the wheel doesnt seem to spin as freely as when i 1st got it. Its certainly not like riding with the brakes on but is doesn't seem quite as free as before when picking the back wheel up and spinning it.

I undertand the wheels have cartridge bearings which are under a cover secured by an allen bolt - I assume there is a nut under this which tightens against the bearings ?

Is it possible to over-tighten against the cartridge bearing and for this to cause the wheel to drag a little. If so is it easy enough to open up and just back the nut off a little ?

2-3 hundred miles on wheel which was purchased approx 2.5 months ago - not ridden too much due to other commitments. Road riding only.

To clarify - was purchased online, just took to LBS for an opinion and then to get adjusted following agreement of online retailer.

Online retailer advised if tightening didnt remove play we could discuss further. Tightening did remove play but now seems to spin less freely.

Wheels were an upgrade for my Boardman Comp.

If you pick the back wheel up and spin it just seems to come to a stop quicker than it did before things got tightened up.

I have racing zeros, if the adjustment is the same then they are a traditional cup and cone for the axel bearing, this may have been done up a tiny bit too much, on the non drive side there is a black color with a 2.5mm Allen key, slacken this off and back off the color 1/8 of a turn, make sure play doesn't come back, it's a fine balance.
If you look on fulcrums website they have very good guides on how to adjust bearings.

You may find they are actually cup and cone which have been adjusted slightly too tight. Knowing how to tweak it yourself would be no bad thing.

I've used Racing 5s on my cross bike for a few years, there's no way to adjust the bearings, they are sealed cartridge bearings sandwiched between spacers on the axle, with two threaded caps that clamp the whole thing together. The bearings are inexpensive to replace, and new ones will have more drag than the old ones. Nothing to worry about.

I was under the impression that the newer ones, as the OP has, are cup and cone.

I had this with my Racing 5s, there was always a bit of play in the rear wheel, only noticed it on steep climbs, but could replicate it with my hand

If I did wheel up tight this helped but I think it finished off the bearings a bit as it went as the OP described

looking at fulcrum site, the 5's done have the adjustment, just the 3's zeros etc...
