Any reason why a bloke shouldnt ride a ladies bike?

I move to Southampton in September and want a cheap bike that i can use around town.
Id like a ladies bike with a basket on the front so i can do my shoping on a push bike.
Looking like a hipster prick aside - is there any reason why i shouldnt ride one?
Do they not stand the abuse a mans bike would take?

I used to have something similar when I worked in Holland be aware although Southampton is reasonably flat there are some nasty hills about so singlespeed is not ideal.

I once had the womens version of a Carrera Subway.
I already had one (mens) but bought this because the back wheel was missing and it was a ridiculous discount, but for the life in me I couldn't tell the difference, except the logo was purple not silver.
I bought it for spares for the original but ended up just swapping the back wheel and using it as a new bike.

In all seriousness unless you are riding towards Winchester there are no real hills in Southampton. I ride a 12 mile commute each way, with elevation of 250ft. That covers the city centre and either side of it.
If the OP is only riding around town then a single speed will be more than adequate.
There is no reason why you shouldn't ride a ladies bike, at all.
The main reason for ladies/mens bike is geometry. Ladies usually have longer legs and shorter bodies then men. But this doesn't account for everyone. As long as you're comfortable is all that counts.
Frame style goes back to the Victorian days where ladies wore long skirts and had less leg movement then men so needed the lower top tube to get onto the bike like a true lady. Nowadays the style just continued but shouldn't affect the strength due to modern alloys etc. A lot of womens frames nowadays are the same style as mens.
