How old are you, and how confident are you that it was piriformis as the culprit?
On the bike you're in a flexed position for the lumbar spine. This opens up the intervertebral foramen, which is where nerve roots exit. It's possible that being in this position releases pressure off of a nerve and helps your symptoms.
There are numerous other reasons. If you're anywhere down south near Portsmouth where I work I'd be happy to help a fellow PH cyclist out free of charge (Chiropractor).
Have you found anything else which makes your symptoms better? I haven't read your other thread as yet but will do when I get the chance, but it may not be for a few days yet.

I get problems with my Piriformis locking and have found a bean bag type hot pack that is microwavable to give me the quickest relief.
Heat the pack and fold in half to create a raised surface and lie on it so that its pushed firmly into the piriformis muscle; after a few minutes mine goes into spasm as the muscle unlocks where i can release the pressure and flatten the pad but leave in place.

Crikey, was it the disc issues that caused the piriformis or the other way round ? Can you still ride ?
I’ve just seen my osteo and had my Sacroiliac joint released, she seems to think that’s what is causing my issues, which are more lower back and glute related than sciatic.
My SI keeps locking, in fact the last 3 weeks of physio visits have been the first time it hasn't been locked (every week) for about a year I’ve just seen my osteo and had my Sacroiliac joint released, she seems to think that’s what is causing my issues, which are more lower back and glute related than sciatic.
We've been trying to get to the cause but it's difficult. I have historic back issues (now fused at L3/4) but now SI locking, tight ITBs and right side of my back in constant spasm from lumbar to shoulder, as well as the associated muscles around the side and front. Changes which are helping seem to be daily exercises and stretches, changing my work desk setup, new mattress, and a weekly pilates class which pushes me more than I do at home. Theory is... weak glutes on the right which are causing the SI to lock, and my left hip to dip when I walk or pedal, which in turn aggravates everything. It's a vicious circle !!!!! What's your physio's theory about the cause? Mine has looked at videos of me on the bike and walking, my desk, my bed etc and been making recommendations along the way. My hip dips on the bike too, so been looking at various things - partly position but mostly strengthening.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
