Out for a ride the other day and my OH's bike was making some annoying sounds.
There is a distinct clicking that happens once a crank rev, I guess it sorta sounds like the initial click you here if the mech is just pushing to change gear. This of course stops when you stop pedaling.
The other noise is weird, like a "pinking" noise. This is going all the time and comes from the back wheel. I cannot work out what is causing it. Any ideas?

The crank click I had. It could be the bolts attaching the chain rings to the crank arm are lose or over tightened. They need to be tightened equally. It could be the bearings in the bottom bracket. If the bike is very old it might be worth replacing that I would leave it unless it gets really bad.
The pinking is probably the brake/gear cables under one of the tubes twanging against the frame. My bike as three rubber grommets on the cables to prevent this but after a while they slide down one end and create slack in the cable which does this.

How easy are these to tighten up? Can you even tell just by hand which ones are loose?You need to be careful tightening them though as you can through off the balance. Should be some videos on YT on how to do it correctly.

The guy who sold the bike to us is actually a really good friend and he got the thing serviced before he sold it to us (for mates rates as well!). So I know he hasn't sold us a dummy, least not intentionally.
I don't know what was done at the service, but it was a fair cost. I know various brackets and bearings were serviced. Perhaps truing and stuff has been done as well and its just the spokes untwisting.
Have to check pedals and the skewer (perhaps the quick release isn't done up tight enough). Got a spoke key already so will do what I can.
My OH actually has a bike mechanic coming into their work tomorrow so maybe if I send her away with a little check list, they can take a look.
Another annoyance as well is the presta valve on the front wheel doesnt seem to want to engage with the pump! so I can't inflate it properly! The nipple unscrews and the valve depresses, letting air out, but when I put the pump head on I get nothing. Back tyre valve is the same type and works as expected.
