Turbo Trainer

Thinking slightly ahead to when the dark nights set in.

I have a mountain bike which I use in all weathers etc. However it would be nice to be able to peddle at home on a week night rather than hump around the streets.

So are they any good ? I'm not looking at spending a lot on one.

How much noise do they make ? I don't want to wake the kids up.

Any general advice welcome

no good In the house imo

a non heated conservatory or shed is the best place, you just over heat other wise.
you still need a fan even then.

i googled quiet trainer as it would be in a room under a bedroom. Bought an Elite crono fluid last year.
£135 (wiggle sale) seemed steep at the time but the thing makes very little noise. Needed a 26" Vitoria trainer tyre and thin inner tube.
It runs in some sort of oil which gives resistance comparative to the gear your running. Low gear easy, high makes you sweat lots. It's boring as fk tho!! music helps or a YouTube ride along vid helps.

Not used it since feb as been out with mates 2 times a week this summer.

Mate has a Halfords £60? magnetic one in his garage, you can hear it buzzin away with door shut so no good for me.

I'm thinking of one for the winter but struggling for where to use it. I have a small terrace but it's open to the elements and if it's dry enough for the turbo then I may as well be out on the roads. I ride hot at the best of times so I don't think I could use one indoors.

Take a look at rollers. More interesting although still boring. Much more fun to head out with good lights and good clothes.

I've got the cyclo ops 2 fluid thing, nice kit but i never use it, I thought i'd use it all last winter but to be honest i just prefer to go out for a cycle.

I use mine in the house, but I don't have kids, makes plenty of noise but I don't really care as I've got music on usually or watching the TV quite loudly.

I have the same one and can confirm it's pretty quiet.

I use mine either in the conservatory or outside if it's dry. But I'm using it when my Mrs works evenings and I'm home with the kids so can't go out.

I've looked at Zwift too, which looks quite good for relieving the boredom. I just need to get an Ant+ dongle though to actually use it.

I have the same bit of kit.again, I haven't used it too much ch either but I think it's very good.

As has been said, they are boring but I use a YouTube video on silent with the music system going for motivation. That way I have guidance of what to do, which gives you something to focus on and the music

how about spin sessions / classes?

if you got a few cyclists along to the same one, wouldn't that be better than all sitting in their own sheds on the turbo?

sure, it lacks the convenience of home training, but it might break the boredom once in a while

do they still do roller racing leagues? I used to like the ones they did in Sheffield back in the 80's!

Started using my trainer in the mornings for an hour before work now for the last few weeks and am set up in the garage. Don't look at turbo fan versions, they are noisy. I use a magnetic Tacx and with a bit of music the whine of loading up the resistance is only back ground noise.
